The Shelter Support Specialist will collaborate within a dedicated team to deliver impactful and relevant services to shelter residents and tenants, guided by a feminist framework that acknowledges the complexities of trauma and oppression. This role serves as a vital resource for both staff and participants, encompassing a comprehensive range of services, including crisis intervention, case management, and the design, execution, and assessment of workshops. The Specialist will share the responsibility for maintaining the overall health and safety of the facility.

ABOUT YWCA TORONTO - 1st STOP WOODLAWN
This program accommodates up to 62 shelter beds for youth (16-24 years) and adult (25 and older) women, trans, and non-binary participants. Operating as part of a communal living site, it includes 72 units of permanent housing. Shelter Support Specialists will adhere to a fixed schedule that may involve weekday and/or weekend shifts, and will be responsible for the case planning of all shelter residents. This shelter is funded by the City of Toronto and complies with established shelter standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Utilize knowledge of trauma and the dynamics of gender-based violence and homelessness to formulate and implement effective support strategies; Collaborate with participants individually and/or in groups to enhance social and living skills by assisting them in setting goals, executing plans, recognizing options, and making positive choices; Provide assessment and case management support services to residents focusing on harm reduction, immigration, legal, health and wellness, education, and training; Develop a personalized plan with residents to facilitate a safe and effective path to independence; Create, implement, and evaluate workshops and groups addressing participants' mental health issues and experiences of trauma using interactive techniques (e.g., expressive art techniques) and collaborate with other YWCA programs in this area; Engage with the staff team in reflective practice to ensure the development and implementation of high-quality programs and services; Ensure adherence to Health and Safety Guidelines in accordance with YWCA Toronto's policies and procedures, including taking corrective action in response to potential safety hazards; Perform any other duties as required. QUALIFICATIONS Comprehensive knowledge of an academic discipline typically acquired through completion of a clinically supervised undergraduate degree (e.g., BSW). An analytical framework that identifies clients' relation to social systems and demonstrated practical application of this framework, (Cases for Equivalency will be considered); 3 to 5 years' experience in a diverse, direct service setting for participants ranging from youth to seniors who have faced poverty, homelessness/under-housing, violence/trauma, mental health/substance use, or concurrent disorders and other forms of marginalization or oppression; Completion of Toronto Hostel's Training Certificate (T.H.T.C.) or equivalent; Demonstrated knowledge and application of anti-oppression, trauma-informed, harm reduction, and feminist frameworks; Familiarity with community resources and supports; In-depth understanding of the dynamics of gender-based violence and trauma within an anti-oppression framework; Working knowledge and application of the intersections of systemic oppression (anti-black racism, anti-indigenous racism); Experience providing culturally sensitive services in a multicultural environment; Strong communication and interpersonal skills; Proficiency in Microsoft Word, email, and the Internet; Completion of Hostel Services Shelter Standards is an asset; Familiarity with the Residential Tenancies Act, Mental Health Act, Housing Services Act, and Ontario Human Rights Code is an asset; Knowledge of relevant legislation regarding immigration and refugee policy and law is an asset; A certificate in trauma counselling is an asset; Proficiency in a second language is an asset.
