ABOUT YWCA TORONTO - 1st STOP WOODLAWN
The Community Shelter Support Specialist will collaborate with a dedicated team to deliver impactful services to shelter residents within a framework that recognizes the complexities of trauma and oppression. This role serves as a vital resource for both staff and participants, encompassing a comprehensive range of services including crisis intervention, case management, and the design, execution, and assessment of workshops.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Utilize expertise in trauma-informed care and the dynamics of gender-based violence to create and implement effective support strategies;
- Work with participants individually and in groups to enhance their social and living skills, guiding them in goal-setting and decision-making;
- Provide assessment and case management services that focus on harm reduction, legal support, health and wellness, and educational opportunities;
- Collaborate with residents to establish a plan that promotes a safe and effective transition to independence;
- Develop and facilitate workshops addressing mental health and trauma, employing interactive methods and partnering with other programs;
- Engage in reflective practice with the team to ensure the delivery of high-quality programs and services;
- Adhere to Health and Safety Guidelines, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and procedures;
- Perform additional duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A clinically supervised undergraduate degree (e.g., BSW) with a focus on social systems and their impact on clients;
- 3 to 5 years of experience in a diverse service environment, supporting individuals affected by poverty, homelessness, trauma, and other forms of marginalization;
- Completion of relevant training certifications;
- Strong understanding of anti-oppression, trauma-informed, harm reduction, and feminist frameworks;
- Familiarity with community resources and support systems;
- In-depth knowledge of gender-based violence dynamics within an anti-oppression context;
- Experience providing culturally sensitive services in a diverse setting;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and online communication tools;
- Knowledge of relevant legislation regarding housing and human rights is advantageous;
- Additional certifications in trauma counseling or proficiency in a second language are considered assets.
