The Community Shelter Assistance Specialist will collaborate with a dedicated team to deliver impactful services to shelter residents within a framework that recognizes the effects of trauma and oppression. This role serves as a vital resource for both staff and participants, providing a comprehensive range of services, including crisis intervention, case management, and the design, execution, and assessment of workshops. Additionally, this position contributes to maintaining the overall safety and well-being of the shelter environment.

ABOUT YWCA TORONTO - 1st STOP WOODLAWN

This program accommodates up to 62 shelter beds for youth (ages 16-24) and adult women, trans, and non-binary individuals. It operates as part of a larger living community that includes permanent housing units. Community Shelter Assistance Specialists will follow a fixed schedule that may involve both weekday and weekend shifts, focusing on case planning for all shelter residents. This shelter is supported by municipal funding and adheres to established shelter standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Utilize knowledge of trauma and gender-based violence to create and implement effective support strategies.
  2. Work with residents individually and in groups to enhance social and life skills, assisting them in setting goals and making positive choices.
  3. Provide assessment and case management services focusing on harm reduction, legal, health, and educational support.
  4. Collaborate with residents to establish a plan that promotes a safe and effective transition to independence.
  5. Design, implement, and evaluate workshops addressing mental health and trauma, using interactive methods and collaborating with other YWCA programs.
  6. Engage in reflective practice with the team to ensure high-quality program development and service delivery.
  7. Adhere to Health and Safety Guidelines as per YWCA Toronto policies, taking necessary actions to address potential safety issues.
  8. Perform additional duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Comprehensive knowledge typically acquired through a clinically supervised undergraduate degree (e.g., BSW) and practical application of this knowledge.
  2. 3 to 5 years of experience in a diverse service setting, supporting individuals affected by poverty, homelessness, trauma, and other forms of marginalization.
  3. Completion of relevant training certificates or equivalents.
  4. Demonstrated understanding of anti-oppression, trauma-informed care, and harm reduction principles.
  5. Familiarity with community resources and support systems.
  6. In-depth knowledge of gender-based violence dynamics within an anti-oppression context.
  7. Experience providing culturally sensitive services in a diverse environment.
  8. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  9. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and online communication tools.
  10. Knowledge of relevant legislation related to housing and human rights is advantageous.
  11. Additional certifications in trauma counseling or knowledge of a second language are beneficial.
