Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Veterinary Technician 2 to join our team at the City of Toronto. As a key member of our animal care team, you will be responsible for providing exceptional care and support to animals in our shelter.

Key Responsibilities
  • Animal Care and Handling: Provide daily care and humane handling of animals, including feeding, watering, grooming, and maintaining sanitary conditions in the shelter.
  • Triaging and Health Assessments: Triage animals as they arrive in the shelter, administer animal health requirements, flea treatments, and parasite control, and perform physical and behavioral assessments.
  • Medical Support: Prepare and administer medication, including giving subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, vaccines, and treatments, as prescribed by the veterinarian.
  • Record Keeping and Data Management: Collect, prepare, and record biological samples, and maintain accurate records for animal inventory, health, medications, treatments, procedures, and behavioral history.
  • Customer Service and Education: Provide exceptional customer service to the public, and participate in the delivery of public education programs and animal services events.
  • Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with the Shelter Veterinary Technician, veterinarian, and other team members to maintain medical and shelter inventories and supplies.
Requirements
  • Education and Experience: Post-secondary education in animal care discipline, and considerable experience working directly with dogs, cats, or small animals in a shelter and/or veterinary clinic setting.
  • Skills and Abilities: Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task, and excellent interpersonal and conflict management skills. Ability to work in a customer service environment, and to effectively communicate verbally and in writing at all levels of the organization.
  • Physical Demands: Good physical condition, agility, and strength, including ability to stand for long periods of time while cleaning and feeding animals, managing and lifting animals, and handling heavy articles.

This is a highly demanding work environment with many competing priorities and deadlines. The successful candidate must be able to work in a safe, efficient, and courteous manner, and to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities.
