Position Summary

Reporting to the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (VPRI), the incumbent brings the highest standards of professionalism and dedication to achieve maximum quality and productivity in the delivery of services and supports to the university of Ottawa research community.

The AVP, RSI will demonstrate outstanding leadership, flexibility and tact in promoting and supporting opportunities for the development and maintenance of world-class research installations. Through close collaboration with the faculties, the incumbent will play a key strategic role in maximizing the research impact of large infrastructure projects on campus and be responsible for developing and managing university-wide research operations, including internal programs. The incumbent also has overall responsibility for the institutional support program for core facilities. The AVP, RSI will ensure that the use of animals in research and in teaching conforms to the most rigorous ethical standards while actively supporting cutting edge science. The AVP, RSI is also accountable for the Office of the Research Ethics and Integrity to ensure research projects respect all applicable guidelines, including those of the Tri-councils (SSHRC, NSERC and CIHR).

Major activities

As a senior member of the OVPRI executive team, the incumbent will play a key leadership role in the management of the Strategic Development Initiative (SDI) group as well as the Animal Care and Veterinary Services (ACVS), Animal Ethics (AE) and the Office of the Research Ethics and Integrity (OREI), which serve the University’s mission to be among the leading public research universities in the world.

The Associate Vice-President, Research Support and Infrastructure:

- Oversees the management of the OVPRI core facilities support program;
- Leads major provincial and federal funding initiatives such as Canada Foundation for Innovation and Ontario Research Fund, New Frontiers Research Fund, etc.;
- Leads the development of strategic research programs for the University in the disciplines falling under NSERC, CIHR and Genome Canada;
- Chairs key institutional committees on behalf of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (including the Strategic Projects Management Group, the Biosafety Committee, the Radiation Safety Committee, and the Research Information Committee);
- Provides senior level advice and support to the VPRI in the development of plans and goals for the VPRI portfolio;
- In consultation with the Faculties, provides advice to the VP, Research and Innovation on emerging challenges and opportunities that can lead to changes in strategic priorities and direction the University takes in relation to research and infrastructure.

Represents the University on several key external advisory committees and Boards.

Qualifications - Experience and key competencies

The Associate Vice-President, Research Support and Infrastructure must possess excellent organisational and research leadership skills and must be able to gain and maintain the respect of the research community both within the University of Ottawa as well as across Canada and internationally. Key experience and competencies include:

- A doctoral degree;
- University research experience and peer recognition of its quality and impact;
- Experience in both managing and supporting research in a university context, ideally beyond managing a research centre or laboratory;
- Experience managing research in a multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary context, with sensitivity to the different forms of research;
- Proven leadership skills in a collaborative environment, with an emphasis on the ability to motivate, inspire and build consensus;
- Solid vision of the development, promotion and valorisation of research, as well as a passion for developing research and for nurturing researchers as they strive to develop their scholarly interests and expertise;
