Reporting to the Deputy City Manager, Community Services, the Fire Chief will play a crucial role in the department's mandate to “connect to protect” by strategizing the delivery of fire rescue services to over 1 million Edmontonians. Your primary mission will be to foster a work culture that values innovation, positivity, engagement and collaboration while demonstrating strong leadership abilities, political acumen and relationship skills.
**What will you do?**
- Lead an empowered team, cultivating a dynamic and welcoming environment that encourages individual strengths and collective success
- Develop and lead a visionary strategy and roadmap for delivering fire prevention and emergency response programs and services in support of, and consistent with, City Council and the department’s vision
- Provide senior level guidance and advice to the corporation related to fire rescue services and Office of Emergency Management
- Lead and manage change, build organizational talent and capacity, and achieve organizational outcomes
- Create and support an inclusive, proactive, innovative, positive and progressive culture in EFRS
- Foster a supportive environment that values and invests in the professional growth and aspirations of employees
- Equip staff with the necessary competencies, resources, and empowerment to effectively carry out their responsibilities
- Create, leverage and maintain relationships necessary to advance the corporate and EFRS strategy, including those with the Executive Leadership Team, City Council, unions, Edmontonians, industry leaders, business partners and staff
- Foster integration across the corporation to ensure thorough and seamless delivery of programs and services
- Utilize sound business judgment and critical thinking when allocating resources. Develop and demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the budget and cost elements intrinsic to the EFRS business model
**Qualifications**:
- Knowledge, training and/or education in Business, Engineering, Public Administration, Science or other related discipline
- Extensive experience in a senior leadership role in fire rescue, preferably within a municipal environment
- Demonstrated experience leading teams in a large, complex organization
- Demonstrated experience leading and managing change, creating an inclusive culture, building organizational talent, and empowering resources to achieve outcomes
- Demonstrated experience effectively communicating and collaborating with a variety of partners and stakeholders including senior management, staff at all levels, union representatives, City Council, businesses, and academic institutions
- An equivalent combination of education and experience in a Fire Service leadership position may be considered
**Assets**:
- Experience in a unionized environment working with collective bargaining agreements
- Masters Degree in a related field
- Certificate in Fire Service Administration or NFPA - Fire Officer Level 4 or equivalent
- Additional certification in financial management, change management, public administration, government relations, project management and/or organizational transformation management
