Position summary:

The Pharmacy Technician provides support to and works under the supervision of the Pharmacist. This position is responsible for dispensing and distributing medication, in addition to material management services; including acquisition, storage, and expiry date monitoring and accounts payable activities.


Responsibilities include:

  • Perform daily medication cart exchange for inpatients.
  • Issue Narcotics and Controlled Drugs consistent with standards for security including maintenance of a perpetual inventory record.
  • Maintain stock of PYXIS Automated Dispensing Cabinets
  • Monitor expiry dates and remove expired products for disposal, destruction or return consistent with pharmacy policies and manufacturers’ protocols.
  • Prepackage medication (Narcotic and Controlled Drug stock).
  • Maintain stock of the Emergency Medication trays.
  • Prepare, dispense and maintain vaccines available at Runnymede Healthcare Centre.
  • Monitor stock levels and initiate the acquisition process in a timely manner consistent with legislated and contractual obligations as well as Runnymede Healthcare Centre (Runnymede) procedures.
  • Determine appropriate quantity to purchase consistent with good inventory control principles and physical space for storage.
  • Receive and verify shipments, follow up on back orders and resolve outstanding issues.
  • Receive and document shipments of Narcotics and Controlled Drugs consistent with the legislated requirements and ensure secure storage of same.
  • Ensure invoices are approved by the Manager, IPAC, Lab and Pharmacy Services, and forwarded to Accounts Payable in a timely manner to ensure month-end requirements are met.
  • Maintain Narcotic and Controlled Drug inventory files.
  • Maintain and document COVID vaccine administration on Meditech and COVAX.


The successful candidate will have the following qualifications/experience:

  • Graduate from a CCAPP Accredited Pharmacy Technician Education Program.
  • Registration with the Ontario College of Pharmacists.
  • Membership in a professional association is encouraged.
  • Active involvement in own continuing education.
  • 2-3 years of experience in a Rehabilitation/Complex Continuing Care Hospital Pharmacy Department or an Acute Care Hospital Pharmacy Department preferred.
  • Windows Operating System, Microsoft Office Suite, PakEdge, Medidose, Meditech Expanse.
  • Strong knowledge of proper handling techniques for pharmaceuticals.
  • Familiarity with Pharmacy computer software.
  • Strong skills in pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Knowledge of computerized material management and inventory control procedures.
