In 2019, Katz Group entered the retail cannabis market through a partnership with Canopy Growth, acquiring the exclusive rights to Tokyo Smoke in Ontario, before converting the agreement to a master franchise relationship.


Role Summary:


Reporting to the VP, Payroll & Benefits this position would be responsible for overseeing full cycle payroll & benefits for OEG's Retail Cannabis Division (Tokyo Smoke Brand) in Canada.


Core Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Responsible for ensuring payroll functions are delivered consistently and effectively to salaried and hourly staff, across multiple jurisdictions in Canada.
  • Building, creating, and developing adequate processes, procedures and financial controls within the payroll department and ensure they are functioning, maintained, and monitored to minimize risk and error as well as compliance.
  • Implementing processes to ensure the accuracy and maintenance of all employee data and payment records. Ensuring data protection measures are in place to safeguard employee information.
  • Manage year end audit, including month end and year end closing accruals and account reconciliation.
  • Oversee year end activities, including updating taxable benefits, producing T4's.
  • Manage and develop HRIS and time and attendance systems, as well as reports.
  • Assist in the implementation of key initiatives impacting payroll, including acquisitions.
  • Ensuring payroll is costed correctly, working with operations and finance departments.
  • Managing and dealing with tax compliance matters for payroll, employer health tax, and WCB remittances and filings. Ensuring tax withholdings are done accurately and on a timely basis.
  • Liaising with external organizations such as Franchise owners, CRA, and various workers' compensation boards as required.
  • Maintain uptodate knowledge of payroll regulations, tax laws, and employment legislation, ensuring full compliance and minimizing risk.
  • Continuously assess payroll processes and seek opportunities to streamline and automate tasks by utilizing technology to ensure scalability.
  • Providing leadership, guidance, training, and mentor team members. Foster a positive, engaging and growthorientated work environment that encourages teamwork, innovation, collaboration, and employee development.

Education, Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum 3 years supervisory experience
  • 5+ years of experience in processing full cycle payroll
  • CPM designation with the Canadian Payroll Association would be an asset
  • Extensive working knowledge of payroll, HRIS and time & attendance systems is preferred, experience with UKG, ABI, Humanity and Great Plains would be an asset
  • Experience providing payroll services within franchise arrangements would be considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, mentor, team building and support staff
  • Understanding of various employment standards regulations across Canada, primarily in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland
  • Capable of handling confidential, sensitive and personal information
  • Strong planning and organization skills to determine priorities with strict deadlines
  • Well organized with superior attention to detail
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office; including advanced Excel
