Position Summary

The Calgary Stampede has a robust and mature yet flexible volunteer program with more than 2,500 dedicated volunteers. Calgary Stampede Volunteers embody western culture by hosting events across the city, supporting community celebrations, and making the Calgary Stampede The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. Reporting to the Vice President, Communications and Volunteer Services, this position is responsible for the governance and operational planning for all volunteer services related programs including the execution of organizational objectives and activities related to Calgary Stampede's strategic plan and volunteers. This position regularly interacts with our volunteer leaders providing strategic guidance and operational support.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

Oversee the operations of the Stampede’s Volunteer Services division, which includes leading a team of Volunteer Services advisory and support employees as well as a systems administration and support department that manages organization-wide accreditation services. Execute on the Stampede’s Volunteer Services Business Plan, setting and delivering on annual work plan goals, while ensuring alignment to the organization’s Strategic Plan objectives. Work collaboratively with Executive Management and Volunteer Leaders, as designated, to develop and implement the Volunteer Services Business Plan strategies for the organization, including recruitment strategies and developing volunteer best practices and standards Provide mentorship, leadership coaching, and tools to the volunteer committee leadership, Staff Liaisons and Director Liaisons to foster a professional and collaborative working environment, ensuring that teams are focused on achieving organizational results and doing so while reflecting the reputation and the brand of the Stampede. Oversee all volunteer and Shareholder reporting requirements to the Board and support Shareholder record keeping and communications at the direction of the Corporate Secretary. Develop industry networks, keep up to date on sector best practices, and ensure the Calgary Stampede’s volunteer program continues to evolve with changes in the sector and in the community. Regularly provide information and reports to Executive Management to ensure that programs are current and effective. Promote the Calgary Stampede’s volunteer program and represent the organization through public speaking, functions and meetings with stakeholders. Develop and manage department operating and capital budgets.

Qualifications & Experience

The ideal candidate will be proactive, optimistic and have worked in a dynamic environment where they have experience delivering on multiple priorities, as well as:

Post-secondary education in Volunteer Management, Human Resource Management, Business Administration, or related field preferred. A combination of education and experience will be accepted. Volunteer management certificate is an asset. Minimum 10 years’ experience required The Calgary Stampede uses Salesforce as its volunteer database management system. Previous experience preferred. Human resources related business systems management. Human resources generalist, with at least four years working in volunteer management overseeing a significant number of volunteers and employees in both a public and youth mentoring environment. Professional mediation skills. Familiarization with Human Rights legislation, Occupational Health and Safety legislative requirements, and Vulnerable Sector requirements for volunteers. Experience establishing and maintaining productive client relations, strategic partnerships and networks both within and outside an organization. Demonstrated success in change management to influence outcomes and drive success of volunteer resources initiatives. As many volunteer events and meetings occur in the evenings and on weekends, the successful candidate must be available to work some irregular hours.
