Position Overview

The Calgary Stampede boasts a comprehensive and adaptable volunteer program comprising over 2,500 committed volunteers. These individuals exemplify western culture by hosting events throughout the city, supporting community celebrations, and contributing to the Calgary Stampede's reputation as The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.

Reporting to the Vice President of Communications and Volunteer Services, this role is accountable for the governance and operational planning of all volunteer service-related programs. This includes executing organizational objectives and activities aligned with the Calgary Stampede's strategic plan and volunteer initiatives. Regular interaction with volunteer leaders is essential, providing strategic guidance and operational support.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position encompass, but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing the operations of the Volunteer Services division, leading a team of advisory and support staff, as well as managing a systems administration department responsible for organization-wide accreditation services.
  • Implementing the Volunteer Services Business Plan, establishing and achieving annual work plan goals while ensuring alignment with the organization's strategic objectives.
  • Collaborating with Executive Management and designated Volunteer Leaders to develop and execute strategies for the Volunteer Services Business Plan, including recruitment initiatives and the establishment of volunteer best practices and standards.
  • Providing mentorship, leadership coaching, and resources to volunteer committee leaders, Staff Liaisons, and Director Liaisons to cultivate a professional and collaborative working environment, ensuring teams focus on achieving organizational results while upholding the Stampede's reputation and brand.
  • Managing all volunteer and Shareholder reporting requirements to the Board and supporting Shareholder record-keeping and communications as directed by the Corporate Secretary.
  • Developing industry networks, staying informed on sector best practices, and ensuring the Calgary Stampede's volunteer program evolves with community and sector changes.
  • Regularly supplying information and reports to Executive Management to ensure programs remain current and effective.
  • Promoting the Calgary Stampede's volunteer program and representing the organization through public speaking engagements, functions, and stakeholder meetings.
  • Developing and managing departmental operating and capital budgets.

Qualifications & Experience

The ideal candidate will be proactive, optimistic, and experienced in dynamic environments where they have successfully managed multiple priorities. Key qualifications include:

  • Post-secondary education in Volunteer Management, Human Resource Management, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred. A combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • A volunteer management certificate is advantageous.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience is required.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce as a volunteer database management system is preferred.
  • Experience in human resources-related business systems management.
  • A background as a human resources generalist, with at least four years in volunteer management overseeing a significant number of volunteers and employees in both public and youth mentoring settings.
  • Professional mediation skills.
  • Knowledge of Human Rights legislation, Occupational Health and Safety legislative requirements, and Vulnerable Sector requirements for volunteers.
  • Proven success in establishing and maintaining productive client relations, strategic partnerships, and networks both within and outside an organization.
  • Demonstrated success in change management to influence outcomes and drive the success of volunteer resource initiatives.
  • Availability to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, as many volunteer events and meetings occur during these times.
