Education Team:

The AVI Health and Community Services South Island Education Team provides harm reduction and sex-positive education to service providers, community partners, and those with lived/living experience of substance use, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, sexual and gender diversity, etc. Through funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), Island Health and United Way, the South Island Education team seeks to reduce transmission of sexually transmitted bloodborne infections (STBBIs); increase access to prevention services; support those impacted by the toxic drug poisoning crisis; support testing initiatives; promote sexual health through sex-positive education; and increase capacity for low-barrier, person-centred harm reduction practices across Vancouver Island.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Health Promotion Casual Educator (Special Focus) assists in providing specific programming, education, and support relating to one or more of the following specific workshop topics:

• Sexual Health (HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STBBIs)

• Harm Reduction (substance use and/or overdose prevention)

• Gender and sexual diversity/2SLGBTQIA+ community

• Queer disability (invisible/visible)

All workshops are developed to increase community awareness and wellness, and reduce the further incidence of HIV, HCV, STBBIs, and other related blood-borne infections with a focus on the needs of people who are living with, or at high risk of contracting HIV, Hepatitis-C, experiencing overdose, and/or using illicit substances on Vancouver Island.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Participates in the design/updating of specific educational workshops

2. Facilitates presentations and workshops

3. Covers workshops and presentations when staffing is low (sick calls, etc.)

4. Provides prevention strategies as a means of increasing awareness and wellness

5. Maintains up-to-date and accurate knowledge related to their specialized topic(s)

6. Participates in planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational activities

7. Maintains files, stats and records related to the program, electronic and paper, and reports on program work

8. Assists with educational events (including PRIDE, Hep-C Day, Core Training, etc.)

9. Performs other related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training, and Experience:

• Have lived/living experience with one or more of the following areas: HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, Gender and Identity, Substance use, Sexual health/sexual decision-making, 2SLGBTQIA+ community, Harm Reduction/Overdose Prevention, Disability (invisible/visible)

• Demonstrated experience working with HIV/AIDS, HCV and/or STBBI prevention and awareness and/or community development and support

• Experience designing workshops and presentations, including using related technological platforms (e.g. PowerPoint, Canva, Outlook, Word, social media platforms, etc.)

• Demonstrated experience planning and facilitating workshops and educational events

• Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekend, as needed

• Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License, an asset

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Holistic understanding of HIV/AIDS, HCV, and STBBIs (transmission, prevention, treatment, related psycho-social issues, etc.), substance use, harm reduction, disability, sexual health, homophobia/heterosexism/transphobia, anti-oppression work and intersectionality, Indigenous health, colonization, population health and health promotion strategies

• Strong public speaking and group facilitation skills

• Good communication skills – both written and verbal

• Ability to establish and maintain good rapport with team members and community

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

• Demonstrated understanding and commitment to harm reduction principles and practices.

• Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with volunteers, co-workers and community partners

• Experience working with people from a diversity of backgrounds including people who use substances, GBMSM, women, gender variant folks and other members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, youth at risk, people living with disability (invisible/visible), and Indigenous people/communities

POSITION DETAILS:

• Pay: $30.20/hour to start with stepped increases based on your seniority with AVI. (Pay for this role is based on the BCGEU paygrid 31)

• Hours and Schedule: Casual basis with potential shifts falling Monday to Friday with some evening and may include weekend shifts. Hours dependent on department needs

• Position and end date: This is a casual position and contract end date depends upon funding

• Location: AVI Victoria office.

• Union: AVI is a union environment under the Collective Agreement: HEABC & Health Services & Support Community Subsector Association 2022-2025 and this role is a BCGEU union position.

• Pension: If you are already a member of the Municipal Pension Plan (MPP), you can continue with them at AVI immediately. At this time, AVI contributes an additional 9.31% towards your pension account. If you are not already a member of the Municipal Pension Plan, part time staff may become eligible after 2 years with AVI.

• Other Perks: This position gets paid an extra 5% in lieu of vacation 5% in lieu of stats, meaning your hourly rate is actually 10% higher than listed.

• Hours of Work, Days Off and Work Area may be subject to change.
