About the Education Team:

The South Island Education Team at AVI is focused on delivering harm reduction and sex-positive education to a variety of stakeholders, including service providers and community partners. With funding from various health organizations, our team aims to:

  • Reduce the transmission of sexually transmitted bloodborne infections (STBBIs)
  • Enhance access to prevention services
  • Support individuals affected by the toxic drug crisis
  • Encourage testing initiatives
  • Promote sexual health through inclusive education
  • Build capacity for low-barrier, person-centered harm reduction practices

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Health Promotion Casual Educator (Special Focus) plays a vital role in delivering targeted programming and educational support on specific topics, including:

  • Sexual Health (HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STBBIs)
  • Harm Reduction (substance use and overdose prevention)
  • Gender and Sexual Diversity (2SLGBTQIA+ community)
  • Queer Disability (both visible and invisible)

These workshops are designed to enhance community awareness and well-being while minimizing the incidence of HIV, HCV, STBBIs, and other related infections, particularly among high-risk populations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist in the design and updating of educational workshops
  2. Facilitate presentations and workshops
  3. Provide coverage for workshops during staffing shortages
  4. Deliver prevention strategies to enhance awareness and wellness
  5. Maintain current knowledge on specialized topics
  6. Participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational initiatives
  7. Keep accurate records related to program activities
  8. Support educational events and community outreach
  9. Perform additional related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Experience with HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, Gender Identity, Substance Use, and Sexual Health
  • Proven background in community development and support
  • Experience in designing and delivering workshops using various technological tools
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License is an asset

  • Comprehensive understanding of HIV/AIDS, HCV, STBBIs, and harm reduction
  • Strong public speaking and facilitation skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
  • Capacity to build rapport with diverse community members
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Commitment to harm reduction principles and practices

POSITION DETAILS:

  • Pay: $30.20/hour with potential increases based on seniority
  • Hours: Casual basis with shifts available during weekdays and some weekends
  • Location: AVI Victoria office
  • Union: This position is part of a union environment
  • Pension: Eligibility for the Municipal Pension Plan after a specified period
  • Additional Perks: Extra compensation in lieu of vacation and statutory holidays
