Job DescriptionAs Legislative Assistant, your role will include, but not be limited to:Conduct research and analysis on legislative and policy issues (both government bills and private members’ bills), committee reports, and emerging issues.Monitor and track legislation, regulations, policy announcements — keep abreast of parliamentary procedure and rules.Prepare briefing materials, speaking notes, draft questions for Question Period, speeches, debate content for the House, committees, and other parliamentary functions.Attend committee meetings, pre‑meetings, stakeholder meetings; take notes; follow up on action items.Oversee the MP’s calendar in Ottawa: coordinate appointments with Ministers, other MPs, stakeholders; manage meeting logistics (room bookings, printing, pre‑reading materials, etc.).Liaise with other MP offices, all levels of government, non‑governmental stakeholders, and interest groups.Respond to constituents’ inquiries (via email, phone, letter), especially on issues related to federal legislation, policy, and services.Assist in planning and executing events.Support communications efforts tied to the MP’s parliamentary work: media scans, drafting op‑eds or commentary, preparing public statements tied to legislative developments.Occasionally work evenings or weekends ( when House is sitting, for events, staffing the member, or urgent legislative deadlines).We believe that this role is not just a job — it’s a launchpad. You thrive when bouncing ideas off others, coordinating multiple moving parts, and delivering under deadline.Academically or practically trained in political science, public policy, government relations, or a closely related field. You’ve either studied it or worked in it — or both.Well‑versed in the Canadian political system, parliamentary procedures, committee work, and relations between different levels of government.Excellent communicator, both in written and oral English. The ability to write and communicate clearly, concisely, persuasively is non‑negotiable.Able to manage multiple priorities, adapt at short notice, and maintain strong organisational skills.Comfortable with stakeholder engagement: working with other MPs’ offices, ministries, non‑profits, community leaders, etc. Diplomacy, tact, and solid judgement are essential.Happy to work in fast‑paced, high‑pressure moments, but also to celebrate team successes — be part of a culture of achievement and fun.What Gives You an EdgeThese are not required, but will put you ahead:Bilingualism (English & French) — priority will be given to bilingual applicants. (Strong oral and written ability in both languages.), other languages are always a plus.Previous political experience: working in an MP’s office, for a political party, on campaigns, policy research, or government relations.Experience preparing policy briefs, speeches, or committee/House materials.Experience dealing with media, communications, social media, or constituent relations.Excellent organisation tools knowledge ( Microsoft Office suite, collaborative tools, possibly social media / content platforms).
