Description

The Department of Medical Genetics in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Coordinator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The role will also support EDI research projects in the Section of Clinical Genetics at the Alberta Children's Hospital. The Research Coordinator position encompasses the technical, analytical, and clerical functions of research studies, and other projects in Medical Genetics, including project implementation.

Reporting to the Program Manager.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Craft and execute strategic initiatives to enhance equity, diversity, and inclusion within national research consortia and networks
  • Develop and conduct training sessions across all consortia, research network or clinical department levels to boost awareness and skills related to EDI
  • Act as the primary contact for all EDI-related inquiries, providing guidance and support to a variety of research teams
  • Provide written consultation on the inclusion of EDI principles and appropriate language in research proposals, research budgets and other documentation
  • Help organize patient partner reimbursement for consultation of their lived experience expertise in various research projects
  • Work closely with research project teams to help them recruit a diverse array of community advisors and research participants, ensuring varied representation
  • Identify and pursue grant opportunities to expand and enhance EDI initiatives in the section of medical genetics
  • Keep abreast of the latest EDI best practices, legislation, and trends to ensure research strategies remain effective and current
  • Perform literature reviews, scoping reviews and needs assessments and summarize knowledge gathered for publication and/or development of guidelines for research networks and consortia
  • Hold focus groups and help design qualitative instruments and analyze qualitative data gathered
  • Track and report on key metrics related to EDI initiatives to inform and guide strategic planning
  • Create and modify ethics applications for the various research projects
  • Work with CSM Legal on regulatory applications and agreements
  • Create consent forms for new research studies, review consent forms, respond to questions and obtain consent for families who wish to enroll in studies
  • Responsible for the research databases of patient and family enrolment including details of date of enrolment in various studies, demographics, study IDs, samples obtained
  • Recruit and explain research to new participants
  • Responsible for ensuring complete and accurate data collection and entry of data into electronic databases in a timely fashion
  • Perform regular quality control checks on data entries

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a health or science related field (including social sciences)
  • An advanced degree or certification in diversity and inclusion, human rights, or social justice will be considered an asset
  • Minimum two years research experience with experience in EDI research in human populations
  • Detail oriented and comfortable with complex workflows
  • Understanding of EDI principles, best practices, and systemic barriers
  • Experience with clinical research and/or direct patient contact
  • Experience administering and/or interviewing study participants including focus groups
  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of research policies and procedures and EDI principles
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP), research ethics and regulations for granting agencies (e.g., Tri Council)
  • Demonstrated ability in professional writing, preparing reports, preparing grants, and conducting literature reviews
  • Requires excellent organization and analytical skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are a necessity
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Adobe and zoom/teams
  • Knowledge of research capture databases such as REDCAP, RareConnect, and StudyTrax is an asset
  • Build and maintain patient and study databases
  • Ability to collect, organize and analyze data
