About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Systems Administrator to join our Digital Learning team at the Royal Conservatory of Music. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for the day-to-day administration of our highly customized Moodle LMS platform, ensuring a seamless user experience for our faculty and students.

Main Responsibilities
  • Delivery Strategy: Develop and recommend delivery strategies that yield a rich, meaningful, and dynamic learning experience for our users.
  • Customization: Understand how to customize environments and source solutions through the global open-source community to meet the needs of our faculty and students.
  • Authoring Tools: Experience with authoring tools and integrating interactive multimedia elements to enhance the learning experience.
  • User Management: Manage and define all user accounts and roles in cooperation with instructional designers and the IT team.
  • PHP and Moodle: Ability to read and understand PHP in the context of Moodle's object-oriented design and work closely with developers to ensure the LMS performs efficiently and can be maintained in an efficient manner.
  • Course Management: Manage course content and backup processes to ensure stability and a seamless user experience.
  • Platform Configuration: Configure the RCM's Moodle platform to best support identified educational objectives, including installing and maintaining custom or user-contributed plug-ins.
  • Data Model: Comprehensive understanding of the Moodle data model, including all core tables, their entities, and relationships, and the ability to write SQL code to update tables or append to tables in certain circumstances.
  • Version Control: Comprehensive understanding and experience with Distributed Version Control Systems and best practice version control processes, including knowledge of Git and Git Repositories.
  • System Testing: Experience in system testing procedures, including function, system, and integration testing, and the ability to configure and maintain all functions/processes in the Moodle administration panel to support the Conservatory's needs in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Community Engagement: Stay current with Moodle support community, research, and share information about updates and features.
  • Training and Support: Provide and prepare LMS training and documentation for colleagues who support the faculty and develop online curricula, and provide tech support and training to front-line staff.
  • Issue Resolution: Provide day-to-day issue resolution to key stakeholders and perform other duties as required or assigned.
Requirements
  • Experience: Five years (minimum) experience as a systems analyst, ideally with CMS/LMS platforms (Moodle preferred), including installation, configuration, maintenance, and technical support.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in server administration using the command UNIX (Linux) line, knowledge of API development and integration, experience in the integration of third-party plugins for enhanced functionality, and in-depth knowledge of course configurations like activities, groups, cohorts, assignments, grades, question banks, etc.
  • Authoring Tools: Knowledge of authoring tools (Captivate, Articulate, SCORM) and responsive design and accessibility features for AODA compliance.
  • Theme Development: Experience installing and modifying themes, and creating child themes.
  • Drupal and E-commerce: Knowledge of the Drupal CMS and framework, and e-commerce systems such as Shopify.
  • Soft Skills: Strong organizational, documentation, and problem-solving skills, ability to juggle multiple projects while delivering quality results within tight deadlines, ability to proactively plan and complete time-sensitive projects, excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills, detail-oriented, and accountable.
