Director of Indigenous Research and Engagement

Job Summary:

The University of Manitoba is seeking a highly qualified and experienced individual to fill the position of Director of Indigenous Research and Engagement. This is a full-time position that will be based on the Fort Garry Campus.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight for Indigenous research initiatives at the University of Manitoba.
  • Develop and implement research programs and strategies that support the needs of Indigenous communities, governments, and corporate partners.
  • Build and maintain strong, respectful, and meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities, governments, and potential Indigenous graduate students.
  • Collaborate with academic faculties and schools, as well as non-academic units, to develop and implement Indigenous research programs and strategies.
  • Support the development of policies and practices that are culturally supportive and respectful of Indigenous communities.
  • Provide training to the UM campus community on Indigenous research methods and ethical practices for community-engaged research.
  • Manage all funds administered through the Office of Indigenous Research.

Requirements:

  • Indigenous (First Nation, Métis or Inuit) with demonstrated research and publication experience and knowledge working with diverse Indigenous cultures, communities, protocols, and practices.
  • Graduate degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience in Indigenous research in a post-secondary setting.
  • Experience fostering reconciliation initiatives with diverse peoples.
  • Experience working with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities, organizations, and governments.
  • Extensive knowledge of Indigenous political platforms as they relate to education, research, and community visits.
  • Knowledge and understanding of university governance, administration, and policies.
  • Experience supervising personnel and as a research project Principal Investigator.
  • Experience in public speaking, advocacy, report writing, and grant writing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral or terminal degree in a relevant field.
  • Three years in an administrative position.
