About the Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our team at Nova Scotia Health and IWK Health. As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting the pre and post-analytical phases of testing, ensuring accurate and efficient specimen handling, and providing exceptional customer service to our patients and healthcare teams.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform various functions relating to specimen procurement, receipt, and processing, including data entry, media preparation, and sterilization.
  • Support laboratory operations by performing clerical duties, loading specimens on analyzers, and troubleshooting equipment.
  • Collaborate with laboratory staff to ensure accurate and timely specimen handling, and provide excellent customer service to patients and healthcare teams.
  • Work independently and as part of a team to achieve laboratory goals and objectives.
  • Adhere to all applicable policies and procedures, including safety and infection prevention and control protocols.
About You

We are looking for a candidate with:

  • A recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent, and current registration with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology and ability to accurately number and label specimens.
  • Manual dexterity to handle sharp instruments and small objects, with the ability to perform procedures with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Basic computer skills, with experience in Meditech preferred.
  • Access to reliable transportation, as travel may be required.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, with French preferred.
