About the Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our team at Nova Scotia Health and IWK Health. As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting the pre and post-analytical phases of testing, ensuring accurate and efficient specimen handling, and providing exceptional customer service to our patients and healthcare teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform various functions relating to specimen procurement, receipt, and processing, including data entry, media preparation, and sterilization.
  • Support laboratory operations, including supply management, troubleshooting, and customer service activities.
  • Ensure positive patient identification and accurate specimen handling, adhering to strict safety and infection prevention and control procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with laboratory staff, healthcare teams, and other stakeholders to provide high-quality patient care.
  • Adapt to updates and changes in operating procedures, demonstrating flexibility and a commitment to excellence.

Requirements:

  • Recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent, with current registration with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology, with the ability to accurately number and label specimens.
  • Manual dexterity to handle sharp instruments and small objects, with the ability to perform procedures with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Basic computer skills, with experience in Meditech preferred.
  • Access to reliable transportation, as travel may be required.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, with French preferred.
