Medical Secretary Role
As a key member of the healthcare team, the Medical Secretary provides administrative support within a team setting. This includes maintaining a safe environment for patients, families, and staff by adhering to safety policies, procedures, guidelines, and emergency procedures.
Responsibilities
- Receive and direct calls from patients and other sources.
- Determine the urgency of incoming calls and take appropriate action.
- Relay information to and from clinical staff and outside facilities.
- Coordinate appointments and tests for patients in collaboration with the clinical team.
- Access patient information systems to retrieve patient data as needed.
- Greet visitors and handle inquiries.
- Arrange meetings and conferences, and prepare associated materials.
- Open, screen, prioritize, and distribute mail.
- Format and edit documents for correspondence.
- Assist with collecting, collating, and preparing reports as required.
- Support clinicians in preparing research documents and grant applications.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Grade 12, graduation from a recognized secretarial program, including a recognized course in medical transcription, and three years' recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Ability to keyboard at 50 wpm.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to organize work and operate related equipment.
- Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada.
