About the Role

Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Low Vision Specialist to join our team. As a Low Vision Specialist, you will play a vital role in empowering individuals who are blind or partially sighted to regain their independence and improve their quality of life.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive functional low vision assessments to identify the individual's visual needs and develop personalized plans to address them.
  • Teach individuals with partial sight how to maximize their residual vision and adapt to their visual impairment.
  • Recommend and train individuals in the use of optical and non-optical aids to enhance their visual function.
  • Educate individuals about their eye condition and vision health, providing them with the knowledge and skills they need to manage their condition effectively.
  • Refer individuals to other internal and external services as needed, ensuring they receive comprehensive support and care.
  • Handle public inquiries regarding vision health and low vision services, providing accurate and empathetic information to those in need.
  • Conduct research on new optical aids, adaptive equipment, and emerging trends in the eye care field to stay up-to-date with the latest developments.
  • Attend professional development training and conferences to enhance your skills and knowledge.
  • Deliver public speaking seminars and workshops on low vision services and related topics to community agencies, groups, and healthcare professionals.
  • Interpret medical information and perform administrative duties, including data input, documentation of assessments, and applicable subsidy programs.
Requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ocular anatomy, physiology, pathology, and low vision rehabilitation, including optical and non-optical aids, visual skills, and adaptive technology.
  • Ability to facilitate group education and provide individualized support to clients.
  • Knowledgeable about disabilities and all life stages, from children to seniors.
  • Demonstrated decision-making and professional judgment.
  • Mature and professional attitude, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-directed, organized, and detail-oriented, with a commitment to individual-centered care.
Education and Experience
  • Graduate of a post-secondary institution with a major in healthcare or vision, such as public health or community nursing.
  • ACVREP certification or equivalent in low vision therapy, or certification as a Certified Orthoptist, AOC, or JCAHPO certified allied health personnel in ophthalmology.
  • Eligible for ACVREP certification.
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent.
  • High level of competency in relevant computer applications.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and math skills.
  • French is considered an asset.
