Our certified professionals deliver training that empowers clients to enhance their daily living skills, promoting independence and improving safety and mobility. We collaborate closely with ophthalmologists, optometrists, and other healthcare professionals, providing essential care through referrals in various settings.

Position Title: Low Vision Rehabilitation Specialist

Location: Timmins, ON

Term: Full-time, Contract

Reports To: Regional Manager, Healthcare Operations

Salary: $27.17/hour

Key Responsibilities

As a Low Vision Rehabilitation Specialist, your primary responsibilities will include:

  1. Conducting comprehensive functional low vision assessments.
  2. Instructing clients on how to maximize their remaining vision.
  3. Recommending and providing training on the use of optical and non-optical aids.
  4. Educating clients about their eye conditions and vision health.
  5. Referring clients to additional internal and external services as needed.
  6. Addressing public inquiries regarding vision health and low vision services.
  7. Researching new optical aids and advancements in the field of eye care.
  8. Participating in professional development training and conferences.
  9. Delivering seminars and workshops on low vision services to community organizations and healthcare professionals.
  10. Interpreting medical information related to vision.
  11. Performing administrative tasks, including data entry and documentation of assessments.
Relationship Building
  1. Collaborating with community rehabilitation teams, agencies, schools, and healthcare practitioners.
  2. Providing support and guidance to clients and their families adjusting to vision loss.
  3. Participating in multidisciplinary team meetings.
  4. Promoting awareness of vision health issues through public education and training.
  5. Assisting in the training and supervision of volunteers and students.
Problem Solving and Decision Making
  1. Ensuring timely delivery of low vision services to help clients regain independence.
  2. Utilizing creative problem-solving skills to address unique client needs.
Leadership and Initiative
  1. Staying informed about new technologies and techniques in orientation and mobility.
  2. Providing leadership and advocacy within the community regarding vision loss.
  3. Mentoring and supervising apprentice staff and volunteers.
  4. Enhancing team collaboration and sharing specialized knowledge.
Qualifications
  1. Strong knowledge of ocular anatomy, low vision rehabilitation, and adaptive technology.
  2. Experience in facilitating group education.
  3. Understanding of disabilities across all life stages.
  4. Demonstrated decision-making and professional judgment skills.
  5. Self-motivated with excellent organizational skills.
  6. Commitment to a client-centered approach.
Experience and Education
  1. Completion of the VLRC National Vision Rehabilitation Training Program.
  2. Graduation from a post-secondary institution in a relevant field.
  3. Eligibility for ACVREP certification.
  4. Proficiency in relevant computer applications.
  5. Strong verbal, written, and mathematical skills.
  6. French language skills are an asset.
Work Environment
  1. Services will be provided in various settings, including offices and community locations.
  2. Flexibility in working hours is required.
  3. Travel may be necessary.
