Position Overview
The Low Vision Rehabilitation Specialist plays a crucial role in assessing and enhancing the quality of life for individuals experiencing vision impairment. This position involves comprehensive evaluations of functional vision capabilities and the provision of tailored support to maximize residual vision.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducts detailed functional assessments of low vision.
- Educates clients on strategies to optimize their remaining vision.
- Recommends and provides training on the use of both optical and non-optical assistive devices.
- Informs clients about their visual conditions and overall eye health.
- Facilitates referrals to additional services as needed.
- Addresses public inquiries regarding low vision resources and services.
- Engages in research related to new optical aids and advancements in the field of vision care.
- Participates in ongoing professional development and training sessions.
- Delivers informative seminars and workshops on low vision topics to various community organizations and healthcare professionals.
- Interprets complex medical information for clients.
- Manages administrative tasks, including documentation of assessments and client interactions.
Collaborative Relationships
- Builds and maintains partnerships with community rehabilitation teams, educational institutions, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders.
- Offers support and guidance to clients and their families in adapting to vision loss.
- Participates in multidisciplinary team meetings to enhance service delivery.
- Promotes awareness of vision health issues through community education and training initiatives.
- Assists in the training and supervision of volunteers and students.
Problem Solving and Decision Making
- Ensures timely access to low vision services, enabling clients to develop essential travel skills for independence.
- Employs creative problem-solving techniques to address the unique needs of individuals.
- Utilizes established procedures to create personalized programs for clients.
- Exercises discretion in determining the necessity for referrals to additional services.
Leadership and Professional Development
- Stays informed about advancements in electronic travel aids and orientation techniques.
- Provides educational leadership to community groups regarding vision loss.
- Mentors and supervises apprentice staff, volunteers, and students, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
- Shares specialized knowledge and skills to enhance team effectiveness.
Qualifications
- In-depth knowledge of ocular anatomy, physiology, and low vision rehabilitation techniques.
- Proven ability to facilitate educational sessions for groups.
- Familiarity with disabilities across all age groups.
- Strong decision-making skills and professional judgment.
- Demonstrates a mature and professional demeanor.
- Highly organized with a keen attention to detail.
- Commitment to an individual-centered approach in service delivery.
Education and Experience
- Completion of the VLRC National Vision Rehabilitation (Low Vision Specialist) Training Program is required.
- Graduates from a recognized post-secondary institution in health care or vision-related fields are preferred.
- Certification from ACVREP as a Low Vision Therapist or equivalent qualifications is advantageous.
- Proficiency in relevant computer applications is essential.
- Excellent verbal, written, and mathematical skills are required.
- Proficiency in French is considered an asset.
Work Environment
- Services are delivered in various settings, including office environments and community locations.
- Flexibility in working hours is necessary.
- Travel may be required as part of the role.
