Low Vision Rehabilitation Specialist

Scope and Overview
This role involves conducting comprehensive assessments of individuals with low vision, utilizing specialized evaluation tools to measure visual acuity, visual fields, contrast sensitivity, color perception, stereopsis, and various visual-motor skills. The Specialist also reviews work history, educational background, technology usage, quality of life, and psychosocial factors related to vision impairment. Additionally, they provide training on the effective use of prescribed low vision aids.
Key Responsibilities
- Administers functional assessments for individuals experiencing low vision.
- Educates clients on maximizing their remaining vision capabilities.
- Recommends and instructs on the use of both optical and non-optical assistive devices.
- Informs clients about their eye conditions and overall vision health.
- Facilitates referrals to appropriate internal and external resources.
- Responds to public inquiries concerning vision health and available low vision services.
- Engages in research related to new optical devices and advancements in eye care.
- Participates in ongoing professional development and training sessions.
- Delivers educational seminars and workshops on low vision topics to community organizations and healthcare professionals.
- Interprets medical documentation relevant to vision health.
- Handles administrative tasks, including data entry and documentation of client interactions.
Collaboration and Relationships
- Builds and maintains partnerships with community rehabilitation teams, educational institutions, healthcare providers, and stakeholders.
- Offers support and guidance to clients and their families in adapting to vision loss.
- Participates in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss client progress.
- Promotes awareness of vision health issues through community education and training.
- Assists in the training and supervision of volunteers and students.
Problem Solving and Decision Making
- Ensures timely delivery of low vision services to help clients develop independence in mobility.
- Employs creative problem-solving skills to address individual client needs.
Leadership and Initiative
- Stays informed about new technologies and methods in low vision rehabilitation.
- Educates community groups about vision loss and available resources.
- Mentors and supervises apprentice staff, volunteers, and students.
- Facilitates teamwork and shares expertise with colleagues.
Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills
- In-depth understanding of ocular anatomy, low vision rehabilitation, and adaptive technologies.
- Proven ability to conduct group educational sessions.
- Familiarity with disabilities across all age groups.
- Strong decision-making skills and professional judgment.
- Demonstrates a mature and professional demeanor.
- Highly organized with a keen attention to detail.
- Commitment to a client-centered approach.
Experience and Education
- Completion of the VLRC National Vision Rehabilitation (Low Vision Specialist) Training Program is required.
- Graduation from a post-secondary institution with a focus on health care or vision sciences.
- Certification as a Low Vision Therapist or equivalent credentials is preferred.
- Proficiency in relevant computer applications is essential.
- Strong verbal, written, and mathematical skills are necessary.
- Proficiency in French is considered an asset.
Work Environment
Services will be delivered in various settings, including community locations and client homes. Flexibility in working hours and travel may be required.
