Position Overview
Role: Low Vision Specialist
Employment Type: Full-time, Contract
Reporting To: Regional Manager, Healthcare Operations

Key Responsibilities
As a Low Vision Specialist, your primary duties will include:

  1. Conducting comprehensive functional low vision assessments to evaluate visual capabilities.
  2. Providing training to clients on how to optimize their remaining vision.
  3. Recommending and instructing on the use of both optical and non-optical aids.
  4. Educating clients about their eye conditions and overall vision health.
  5. Facilitating referrals to additional services as necessary.
  6. Responding to public inquiries regarding vision health and available low vision services.
  7. Engaging in research related to new optical aids and advancements in eye care.
  8. Participating in professional development opportunities and conferences.
  9. Delivering informative seminars and workshops on low vision topics to community groups and healthcare professionals.
  10. Interpreting medical information relevant to clients' needs.
  11. Performing administrative tasks, including documentation and data management.
Collaborative Relationships

In this role, you will:

  1. Build and maintain relationships with community rehabilitation teams, agencies, and healthcare practitioners.
  2. Provide support to clients and their families in adjusting to vision loss.
  3. Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to enhance service delivery.
  4. Promote awareness of vision health issues through community education and training.
  5. Assist in the training and supervision of volunteers and students.
Problem Solving and Decision Making

As a Low Vision Specialist, you will:

  1. Ensure timely delivery of services to help clients achieve independence in mobility.
  2. Utilize creative problem-solving skills to address unique client needs.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  1. A strong understanding of ocular anatomy, low vision rehabilitation, and adaptive technologies.
  2. Experience in facilitating group education sessions.
  3. Knowledge of disabilities across various life stages.
  4. Demonstrated professional judgment and decision-making abilities.
  5. A self-directed and organized approach with attention to detail.
Experience and Education

Applicants should have:

  1. A degree in a relevant field such as health care or vision sciences.
  2. Certification as a Low Vision Therapist or equivalent qualifications.
  3. Strong computer skills and proficiency in relevant software applications.
  4. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
Work Environment

This role involves providing services in various settings, including community locations and client homes. Flexibility in working hours and travel may be required.
