North Island College is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Writing Support Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our Learning Commons, you will provide writing support to students at our Comox Valley and Campbell River campuses.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide one-on-one and small group writing support to students, focusing on academic writing and critical reading skills.
- Support students in understanding and interpreting assignment instructions and expectations, ensuring they meet their academic goals.
- Employ effective critical reading skills to identify and address higher and lower order concerns in student writing.
- Balance student needs, assignment instructions, and tutor perceptions to provide tailored support.
- Search for and provide relevant resources from online academic writing sites to support student learning.
- Coordinate and direct math support, ensuring students receive comprehensive support.
- Respond to a variety of student writing, including accented nonstandard English and basic writing, as well as upper-level academic writing.
- Judge when referrals are needed and effectively refer students to appropriate resources.
- Maintain tutor role boundaries and employ ethical standards to promote academic honesty and learner independence.
- Master's degree in English or equivalent language-based training.
- Experience giving formative feedback on student writing.
- BC teaching certificate or Provincial Instructors diploma is highly desirable.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, time management, interpersonal, and organization skills.
- Ability to adapt tutoring strategies and input to respond to differing learner needs.
- Flexibility and creativity in addressing student needs.
- Ability to work independently and online with a diverse team.
