Position Overview

A postdoctoral researcher position is available in the BACOR lab (Building a Culture of Resilience) under the supervision of Dr. Haorui Wu, Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Resilience, within the School of Social Work, Faculty of Health at Dalhousie University.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will contribute to various research initiatives focused on the effects of climate change and disasters in Canada and globally. Research projects may include:

  • Enhancing engagement and leadership of older adults in disaster scenarios;
  • Investigating gender-based violence related to climate change and disasters for 2SLGBTQIA+ communities;
  • Assessing mental health preparedness for disasters;
  • Establishing a national research network for rapid response studies;
  • Exploring One Health and One Welfare concepts in disaster and emergency management.

Responsibilities encompass qualitative and quantitative research design, execution, data analysis, and dissemination of findings. Depending on qualifications, tasks may involve co-developing research proposals, engaging stakeholders, analyzing data, drafting policy briefs, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will excel in a dynamic, collaborative environment, demonstrating flexibility, self-motivation, attention to detail, and effective multitasking abilities. The researcher will be part of a transdisciplinary team collaborating with various institutions across Canada and internationally.

Qualifications

  • A doctoral degree in social sciences, health sciences, or related fields (e.g., Geography, Education, Communication, Political Science, Public Health, Psychology, Sociology, Urban Planning) with a focus on hazards and disaster research;
  • A strong publication record as the first author in peer-reviewed journals within hazards and disaster research, environmental studies, public health, and related disciplines;
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for diverse audiences;
  • Proficiency in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, data interpretation, and knowledge dissemination;
  • Demonstrated project management capabilities and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively;
  • Evidence of interdisciplinary collaboration in hazards and disaster research, practice, and policy development;
  • Experience in multicultural settings and demonstrated cultural sensitivity.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $50,000 - $70,000 per year.
