Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Dalhousie University Full time
Position Details Position Information Position Title Postdoctoral Fellow (Ocean Nexus-STRI) Posting Number PTAP2625P Department/Unit Marine Affairs Program Location Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Job Summary & Key Responsibilities This postdoctoral fellowship is a two-year appointment (with an option for third) and is open to racialized women (including trans and non-binary women and cisgender women) who have earned a PhD (or equivalent) within the past two years.

This fellowship, supported by Ocean Nexus and the Nippon Foundation, represents a collaboration between the Marine Affairs Program at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada) and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (Panama).

Ocean Nexus () is an international research network designed to establish social equity as the central goal of ocean governance. Guided by the principles of anti-racism, anti-patriarchy and anti-coloniality, we connect scholars worldwide to share stories from historically marginalized perspectives. Researching intersections of systemic inequities grounded in historical and geographical contexts, we aim to hold those in power accountable by (1) recognizing injustice and inequities central to ocean issues through rigorous analyses and critical inquiries; (2) recovering people who are confronted with harm and failures of existing governance structures and social systems; (3) resisting engagement with narratives that fail to explicitly confront inequities; and (4) reversing the systems and policies that perpetuate inequity through disruptive actions and discourses.

The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI ) is a standard-setting global platform for groundbreaking research on tropical forest and marine ecosystems, with the purpose of increasing and sharing knowledge about the past, present and future of tropical systems and human welfare.

The fellow will be joining Dr. Wilf Swartz in the Marine Affairs Program, in further collaborations with researchers of Ocean Nexus and STRI.

The successful candidate will develop and execute field-based research on themes related to blue economy and just transition, applying anti-racist, anti-patriarchy and/or anti-colonial perspectives in their work. Priority experience with qualitative and quantitative analyses and extensive fieldwork are essential and an ability to conceptualize equity within their research framework and understanding of policy analysis are also highly desirable. Field experience in the Central America or the Caribbean would be beneficial.

The fellow will have opportunities to develop their own research agenda within the Ocean Nexus research framework. They will be provided with various leadership training programs, both through Ocean Nexus and STRI, and opportunities to expand their own professional networks via engagement with various international and regional policy platforms.
