Position Overview:

This role is integral to the mission of the YMCA, a prominent nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Aquatics Program Instructor and Lifeguard at YMCA of Northern Alberta is responsible for fostering a secure and welcoming environment that respects all individuals while ensuring effective supervision and risk management across all aquatic programs and services, in alignment with YMCA policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide exceptional services through strong relationships with participants.
  • Develop lesson plans for assigned classes and deliver quality instruction.
  • Ensure high-quality supervision at all times while on duty, maintaining appropriate guard-to-bather ratios and correcting unsafe practices.
  • Promote accident prevention through rule enforcement and diligent maintenance practices, adhering to public health regulations.
  • Respond to incidents and accidents occurring in the aquatic environment.
  • Model best practices by engaging with members in the facility.
  • Exhibit a personal commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of and appreciation for the YMCA's mission, vision, values, and programs.
  • Master emergency procedures and aquatic programming standards, responding promptly to situations in accordance with YMCA policies.
  • Maintain vigilant surveillance of the pool area while ensuring compliance with safety rules and guidelines.
  • Foster positive, respectful relationships with volunteers, members, program participants, and colleagues.
  • Assist participants and families in connecting with one another and the YMCA.
  • Understand the YMCA's aquatic programs and schedules, referring participants to additional programs as appropriate.
  • Receive ongoing feedback through coaching and audits to enhance individual and team performance.
  • Ensure compliance with YMCA Aquatics standards and support the Head Guard in addressing service issues.
  • Conduct regular checks of aquatics facilities and equipment to ensure safety and functionality.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety in the aquatic area, documenting completed tasks for effective communication.
  • Keep accurate records as required by the YMCA and health regulations, including water tests and attendance tracking.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age of 16 years (under supervision of an 18+ year old lifeguard).
  • Required certifications: Intermediate First Aid, CPR-C & AED, Lifesaving National Lifeguard (NL).
  • Instructor certifications: Intermediate First Aid, CPR-C & AED, Lifesaving Swim Instructor (SI) or YMCA Swim Instructor (YSI).
  • Must obtain Oxygen Administration certification within six months of hire.
  • Required to achieve Lifesaving Swim Instructor (SI) or YMCA Swim Instructor (YSI) certification within the first year of employment.
  • Additional certifications such as Aquatics Emergency Care (AEC) and National Coaching certification (NCCP) are advantageous.
  • Ability to obtain a Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Must complete employer-specific WHMIS and child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire.
  • Capability to maintain certification-level currency and readiness, both physically and mentally.

  • Serve as a mentor and role model for staff and volunteers.
  • Complete administrative tasks accurately and promptly.
