Position Overview:

This role is integral to the YMCA, a prominent nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing community welfare through youth development, health promotion, and social accountability. The Aquatics Program Instructor and Lifeguard at YMCA of Northern Alberta is responsible for fostering a secure and welcoming environment that honors all individuals while ensuring effective oversight and risk management across all aquatic programs and services, adhering to YMCA guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide exceptional service by building strong relationships with participants.
  • Design lesson plans for assigned classes and deliver high-quality instruction.
  • Ensure vigilant supervision during guard duty, adhering to safety protocols and guidelines.
  • Promote accident prevention through rule enforcement and diligent maintenance practices.
  • Respond effectively to incidents and emergencies in the aquatic environment.
  • Exemplify best practices by engaging with members and participants positively.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
  • Showcase an understanding of and appreciation for the YMCA's mission, vision, and values.
  • Master emergency procedures and aquatic programming standards, responding promptly to situations as per YMCA policies.
  • Maintain active surveillance of the pool area, ensuring compliance with safety rules.
  • Foster positive relationships with volunteers, members, and colleagues.
  • Assist participants and families in connecting with YMCA resources.
  • Understand and communicate the YMCA's aquatic programs and schedules effectively.
  • Receive constructive feedback to enhance individual and team performance.
  • Ensure compliance with YMCA Aquatics standards and assist in addressing service issues.
  • Conduct regular checks of aquatic facilities and equipment to uphold safety standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety in the aquatic area, documenting completed tasks for smooth operations.
  • Keep accurate records as mandated by the YMCA and health regulations.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age of 16 years (under supervision of an 18+ lifeguard).
  • Certifications: Intermediate First Aid, CPR-C & AED, Lifesaving National Lifeguard (NL).
  • Instructor Certifications: Intermediate First Aid, CPR-C & AED, Lifesaving Swim Instructor (SI) or YMCA Swim Instructor (YSI).
  • Ability to obtain Oxygen Administration certification within six months of hire.
  • Must achieve Lifesaving Swim Instructor (SI) or YMCA Swim Instructor (YSI) certification within the first year of employment.
  • Possession of Aquatics Emergency Care (AEC) and National Coaching certification (NCCP) is advantageous.
  • Ability to pass a Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Completion of employer-specific WHMIS and child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire.
  • Capability to maintain current certifications and readiness.

  • Physical demands representative of those required to perform essential job functions.
  • Ability to perform all lifeguard and instructional skills.
  • Confidence in managing challenging situations and customer concerns.
  • Organizational skills to prioritize multiple tasks effectively.
  • Strong decision-making skills and adaptability to interruptions.
  • Act as a mentor and role model for staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to complete administrative tasks accurately and promptly.
