Aquatics Instructor/Lifeguard Job Description

This role supports the YMCA of Northern Alberta's mission to strengthen community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. As an Aquatics Instructor/Lifeguard, you will create a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while providing effective supervision and risk management to the delivery of all aquatics programs and services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver high-quality services through excellent relationships with participants.
  • Develop lesson plans for assigned classes and provide quality instruction.
  • Provide high-quality supervision at all times while on guard duty, following guard-to-bather ratio and correcting unsafe techniques.
  • Promote prevention of accidents and incidents through rule enforcement and good maintenance practices.
  • Respond to all incidents and accidents that may occur in the aquatic or surrounding area.
  • Role model best practices daily by interacting with members in the facility.
  • Role model a personal commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
  • Demonstrate and promote a personal understanding of and appreciation for the mission, vision, and values of the YMCA.
  • Become an expert in emergency procedures, pool and aquatic programming standards, and best practices.
  • Maintain active surveillance of the pool area and focus while guarding/instructing.
  • Develop and maintain positive, friendly, and respectful relationships with volunteers, members, program participants, and colleagues.
  • Help participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Understand the YMCA's aquatics programs and schedules and refer program participants and families to other programs they may enjoy.
  • Receive regular feedback to improve individual and team performance.
  • Ensure YMCA Aquatics SAM standards are consistently met or exceeded.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of the aquatics area while off-deck.
  • Maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the Alberta health code.
Requirements
  • Minimum 16 years of age under supervision of 18+year old lifeguard.
  • Lifeguard Certifications: Intermediate First Aid, CPR-C & AED, Lifesaving National Lifeguard (NL).
  • Instructor Certifications: Intermediate First Aid, CPR-C & AED, Lifesaving Swim Instructor (SI) or YMCA Swim Instructor (YSI).
  • Obtain Oxygen Administration (O2) within 6 months of hire date.
  • Must obtain Lifesaving Swim Instructor (SI), First Aid Instructor (FAI) or YMCA Swim Instructor (YSI) certification within the first year of hire date.
  • Aquatics Emergency Care (AEC) and National Coaching certification (NCCP) are an asset.
  • Able to obtain a Police Information Check with Vulnerable sector check.
  • Must obtain employer-specific WHMIS and child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
  • Ability to maintain certification-level currency without expiry, as well as physical and mental readiness.

  • Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard and instructor.
  • Able to handle difficult situations and customer complaints with confidence.
  • Able to prioritize many tasks on an ongoing basis; organized and able to follow through.
  • Good decision-making capability and able to be interrupted frequently.
  • Is a mentor and role model for staff and volunteers.
  • Can accomplish administrative tasks accurately and in a timely manner.
