Position Overview

The successful candidate will report directly to the Manager of Pre-Clinical Research and collaborate closely with the Facility Veterinarian and the Chair of the Animal Care Committee. This role is crucial in ensuring adherence to the standards set by CAMH for researchers engaging with animal subjects, while also aligning with the legislative framework established by the Ontario Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) and the federal guidelines issued by the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC).

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the operations of the Animal Care Committee (ACC).
  • Manage the submission and review process for animal use protocols.
  • Implement and monitor post-approval compliance programs.
  • Develop and maintain crisis management and training programs.
  • Contribute to policy formulation and ensure the documentation of standard operating procedures that reflect best practices.

The ideal candidate will foster a workplace culture that values diversity, promotes teamwork, and adheres to all relevant CAMH policies, as well as regulatory and legislative mandates.

Qualifications

The Animal Research Ethics Specialist should possess a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Registration as a Laboratory Animal Technician (or eligibility for registration) is required. A minimum of two years of experience in a laboratory animal environment is essential. Candidates must demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of CCAC policies and OMAFRA legislation (Animals for Research Act). Experience on an Animal Care Committee is advantageous. Familiarity with the processes involved in the completion and evaluation of animal use protocols is preferred.

Successful candidates will exhibit strong self-directed learning capabilities, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and maintain excellent documentation practices. Proficiency in computer applications, particularly Outlook and Microsoft Word, along with experience in database management, is necessary. Building and sustaining professional relationships with team members, stakeholders, and facility users is vital. Candidates should be motivated, dependable, detail-oriented, and well-organized, with strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and the ability to guide and train colleagues in a collaborative environment.
