Position Overview

The successful candidate will report directly to the Manager of Pre-Clinical Research and collaborate closely with the Facility Veterinarian and the Chair of the Animal Care Committee. This role is pivotal in ensuring adherence to the standards set by CAMH for researchers involved in animal studies, while also ensuring compliance with the legislative framework established by the Ontario Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) and the federal guidelines from the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC).

Key responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing the operations of the Animal Care Committee (ACC)
  • Managing the submission and review process for animal use protocols
  • Implementing a post-approval monitoring program
  • Developing and managing crisis response strategies
  • Overseeing training programs and maintaining comprehensive documentation
  • Contributing to policy development and ensuring standard operating procedures align with best practices

The ideal candidate will foster a workplace culture that values diversity, promotes teamwork, and adheres to all relevant CAMH policies, regulatory, and legislative requirements.

Qualifications

The Animal Research Compliance Officer should possess a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Registration as a Laboratory Animal Technician (or eligibility for registration) is required. A minimum of two years of experience in a laboratory animal environment is essential. Candidates must demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of CCAC policies and OMAFRA legislation, particularly the Animals for Research Act. Experience on an Animal Care Committee is advantageous.

Candidates should exhibit strong self-directed learning capabilities, manage multiple projects effectively, and maintain excellent documentation practices. Proficiency in computer applications, including Outlook and Microsoft Word, along with experience in database management, is necessary. Building and maintaining professional relationships with team members, stakeholders, and facility users is crucial. The ideal candidate will be motivated, detail-oriented, well-organized, and possess strong interpersonal skills, good judgment, and tact. The ability to train and mentor colleagues while fostering a collaborative working environment is also required.
