Reporting to the Head of Application Operations for Real-Time Rail & Overlays, the Senior Application Operations Specialist will serve as a hands-on authority in application management, possessing advanced knowledge in Site Reliability Engineering.

Your role will involve driving insights into applications and platforms while collaborating closely with technical teams to deliver and sustain state-of-the-art payment solutions for our clientele.

You will take charge of maintaining, enhancing, tuning, and supporting Interac's high-performance payment systems. Proactively diagnosing, resolving, and mitigating application issues will be essential to ensure optimal performance and availability of national payment systems.

Your focus will be on developing application automation across all environments, promoting proactive observability, detection, and self-healing capabilities. You will also respond to and address escalated critical alerts to minimize service disruptions and client impact.

You will play a vital role in maintaining end-to-end production stability while ensuring compliance with Prominent Payment System (PPS) standards applicable to Canadian payment systems.

This dynamic technical position demands robust insights into applications and systems, along with experience managing critical workloads across cloud, hybrid, and on-premises environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive and prioritize initiatives aimed at enhancing application stability and service automation, ensuring compliance with Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
  • Optimize application performance by utilizing performance data and monitoring tools to continuously enhance service quality.
  • Analyze application testing and production trends, proactively identifying and addressing emerging issues in collaboration with Agile teams, conducting thorough root cause analyses, and diving into code for tuning and enhancements.
  • Develop and implement scalable solutions to minimize manual interventions and streamline application deployment and validation processes (self-healing, auto-scaling, etc.).
  • Enhance the application build, development, and testing processes by integrating and streamlining all facets of Application Operations.
  • Implement application changes, configurations, and code promotions across all environments through automation, ensuring system performance, reliability, and stability.
  • Design and standardize enhanced application insights, including observability and trending metrics (health rules, events, alerts), focusing on predictive analysis and proactive interventions.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive technical and support documentation for our applications and systems.
  • Consolidate and automate dashboards, events, and reports on application performance metrics and KPIs.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance while maintaining application security, technology currency, and addressing vulnerabilities with a focus on continuous improvement and service resilience.
  • Respond to and swiftly resolve escalated issues, providing 24/7 rotating on-call production support while proactively mitigating risks to production systems.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Over 3 years of programming experience in languages such as Java, Python, Spring Framework, AngularJS, etc.
  • Proficiency in version control systems like Git for codebase management and collaboration.
  • Expertise in scripting languages such as PowerShell, Python, and Ansible.
  • Familiarity with microservices and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker).
  • Experience with monitoring tools such as Azure Monitor, Splunk, Dynatrace, Grafana, and ServiceNow.
  • Strong understanding of AKS architectural concepts including clusters, namespaces, nodes, pods, services, autoscaling, and ingress policies.
  • In-depth knowledge of Agile development methodologies and frameworks (e.g., JIRA, GitHub).
  • Understanding of the software lifecycle, including release planning, processes, testing, incident management, and change management.
  • Familiarity with various open-source packages, preferably Spring, Apache, and data transformation formats (JSON, XML).
  • Proficient in data analysis, with the ability to identify and mitigate risks to production systems proactively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of engaging with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • A strong team player who can effectively collaborate with all stakeholders in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with OpenShift Kubernetes.
  • Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) Certification.
  • Familiarity with DevOps principles.
  • Understanding of database systems such as Oracle and PostgreSQL.
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (or similar certifications across AWS, GCP, etc.).
  • Experience working within Agile teams.
  • Experience with OpenShift.
  • Background in Financial and Payment services.
  • ITIL Certification.
