Senior Application Operations Specialist

The Senior Application Operations Specialist will play a crucial role in the maintenance and support of Interac's robust, distributed payment systems. This position involves diagnosing and resolving both infrastructure and application challenges to ensure peak performance and availability of our IT applications. You will conduct root cause analyses and propose enhancements to improve our systems. Collaborating with senior team members, you will gather monitoring requirements from stakeholders and implement solutions using our enterprise monitoring tools, paving the way for the next-generation SRE-based Interac platform.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Comprehending large-scale Java applications, database structures, application monitoring, and fault management.
  • Engaging in Site Reliability Engineering activities, including proactive monitoring, alert responses, and automation.
  • Troubleshooting applications utilizing APM tools such as AppDynamics and Dynatrace.
  • Supporting and maintaining Java/JEE applications.
  • Adopting an SRE mindset to ensure application availability.
  • Identifying application monitoring requirements or performance issues and instrumenting them in AppDynamics and Splunk.
  • Designing and implementing AppDynamics monitoring and tuning (health rules, alerts) for various applications.
  • Investigating and identifying root causes through logs on Linux servers.
  • Facilitating integrations between AppDynamics, Splunk, PagerDuty, and ServiceNow.
  • Identifying automation opportunities for self-remediation.
  • Creating or updating performance analysis reports, dashboards, and knowledge bases.
  • Proposing and executing solutions to enhance application availability and reliability.
  • Working with API & Microservices technologies and containerization.
  • Leading investigation calls and being available for on-call support.

Qualifications:

  • A degree in Computer Science Engineering or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Eligibility to work for Interac Corp. in Canada in a full-time capacity.
  • Proficiency in Core Java Object-Oriented programming and familiarity with basic Enterprise Integration Patterns.
  • A minimum of 5 years (preferably 8+) in software development (Java) and maintenance experience, ideally within the payment systems or banking sector.
  • At least 3 years of experience in Application Support and maintenance of Java/JEE applications, focusing on enhancing application reliability through improved monitoring and dashboard design, preferably with AppDynamics, Splunk, and ELK.
  • Strong understanding of Linux, WebSphere, Firewalls, Load balancers, REST API, Docker, Kubernetes, and Cloud Architecture.
  • RDBMS expertise, particularly with Oracle and/or DB2.
  • Ability to write queries and generate reports from databases and Splunk.
  • Understanding of Networking concepts and hardware.
  • Experience in network troubleshooting and infrastructure optimization.
  • A solid background in Site Reliability Engineering with a focus on enhancing infrastructure and service reliability.
  • Proficiency in debugging within the Java tool stack and a good grasp of REST APIs.
  • Proven experience in supporting high-throughput, low-latency systems and maintaining high-performance, service-oriented architectures.
  • Familiarity with scripting tools such as PowerShell, BASH, Python, and Ansible.
  • A strong understanding of various open-source packages, preferably Spring, Apache, and data transformation (jaxb2, JSON, XML).
  • Experience with CI/CD platforms for deployment.
  • A comprehensive understanding of ITIL service management processes.
  • Experience in contributing to the overall delivery of software components within an agile development framework.
  • A willingness to adapt to new demands and openness to innovative ideas and change initiatives.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively and professionally across teams.
  • A demonstrated ability to achieve successful outcomes in challenging situations and with difficult customers.
  • Proven capability to manage multiple priorities, follow through on projects to completion, and maintain organization while handling information from various sources.
