Role Overview

As a Mental Health Support Worker, you will play a crucial role in the well-being of clients facing mental health challenges. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Monitoring clients in alignment with treatment goals; observing behaviors and symptoms while documenting findings according to established protocols. You will report any medical, behavioral, or other concerns as necessary, providing valuable insights into clients' needs and progress.
  • Engaging in the admission, case planning, and discharge processes by conducting interviews with clients and their families to assess needs, gathering relevant histories, and participating in interdisciplinary team meetings to develop and implement personalized care plans.
  • Building trusting relationships with clients through respect and empathy; offering emotional support and guidance in daily living challenges, and recommending adjustments to treatment objectives in collaboration with the care team.
  • Assisting clients with essential daily activities, including time management and communication skills, while serving as a role model during community appointments to encourage appropriate social interactions.
  • Coordinating with healthcare professionals and community resources, advocating for clients, and providing information about available services.
  • Planning and facilitating group activities such as sports, social support gatherings, and skill development sessions tailored to the clients' needs.
  • Maintaining accurate client records by processing admission documentation, updating computerized databases, and ensuring compliance with reporting requirements.
  • Ensuring a safe and hygienic environment for clients and staff by performing general cleaning duties and managing hazardous materials according to safety protocols.

Qualifications and Skills

To excel in this role, you should possess:

  • A diploma from a recognized Social Services Support Worker program, along with two years of relevant experience, or a comparable combination of education and experience.
  • A valid driver's license, as local travel may be required.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Understanding of recovery principles in mental health.
  • Familiarity with community and health resources.
  • Skills in behavior management and mental health treatment.
  • Ability to foster client rapport and recognize behavioral changes.
  • Competence in conflict resolution and crisis intervention techniques.
  • Cultural competency to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Commitment to understanding and addressing Indigenous rights and historical contexts related to health care.
