Role Overview

As a Mental Health Support Specialist, you will play a crucial role in providing care and support to individuals facing mental health challenges. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Observing and documenting client behaviors and symptoms in line with treatment goals, while reporting any medical or behavioral concerns as necessary.
  • Engaging in the admission, case planning, and discharge processes by conducting interviews with clients and their families to assess needs, gather relevant histories, and contribute to the development of personalized care plans in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team.
  • Building trusting relationships with clients, offering emotional support and guidance, and assisting them in navigating daily living challenges, including self-care and personal hygiene.
  • Aiding clients in daily activities such as time management and interpersonal communication, while also escorting them to various appointments and serving as a role model for appropriate social interactions.
  • Coordinating with healthcare professionals and community resources to advocate for clients and provide information about available services.
  • Planning and facilitating group activities, including sports, social support gatherings, and skill development sessions tailored to client needs.
  • Maintaining accurate client records by processing admission documentation, updating computerized databases, and ensuring compliance with standard procedures.
  • Ensuring a safe and hygienic environment for clients and staff, performing necessary housekeeping duties, and addressing any workplace hazards promptly.

Qualifications and Skills

To excel in this role, you should possess:

  • A diploma from a recognized Social Services Support Worker program, along with two years of relevant experience, or a comparable combination of education and experience.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to travel locally using a personal vehicle.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Understanding of recovery principles in mental health.
  • Familiarity with community resources and health services.
  • Skills in behavior management and mental health treatment.
  • Capability to assist clients in developing healthy life skills and recognizing changes in their condition.
  • Proficiency in managing conflict and employing non-violent crisis intervention techniques.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • A commitment to understanding and addressing the historical and ongoing impacts of colonialism on Indigenous Peoples, as well as familiarity with relevant legislative frameworks.
