Role Overview
As a Mental Health Support Worker, you will play a crucial role in assisting individuals facing mental health challenges. Your responsibilities will include:
- Monitoring clients in alignment with treatment goals; observing behaviors and symptoms while documenting findings according to established protocols. You will report any medical, behavioral, or other concerns as necessary, providing valuable feedback on clients' needs and progress.
- Engaging in the admission, case planning, and discharge processes by conducting interviews with clients and their families to assess needs, gathering relevant histories, and participating in interdisciplinary team meetings to develop and implement personalized care plans.
- Building trusting relationships with clients based on mutual respect; offering emotional support and counseling, assisting with daily living challenges, and suggesting adjustments to treatment objectives in collaboration with the care team.
- Aiding clients in daily activities such as time management, organization, and communication skills. You will also escort clients to various appointments and serve as a role model to encourage appropriate social interactions.
- Coordinating with healthcare professionals and community resources; advocating for clients and providing information about available services.
- Planning and facilitating group activities, including sports, social support gatherings, and skill development sessions tailored to client needs.
- Maintaining accurate client records by processing admission documentation, updating client information in databases, and ensuring compliance with statistical reporting requirements.
- Ensuring a safe and hygienic environment for clients and staff by performing necessary cleaning duties and adhering to safety protocols.
Qualifications and Skills
To be successful in this role, you should possess:
- A diploma from a recognized Social Services Support Worker program, along with two years of relevant experience, or a comparable combination of education and experience.
- A valid driver's license, as local travel may be required.
Essential Knowledge
- Understanding of recovery principles in mental health.
- Familiarity with community, social, and health resources.
- Knowledge of behavior management techniques.
- Awareness of mental health issues and treatment methodologies.
- Ability to foster client development in health-related life skills.
- Capacity to build and maintain rapport with clients.
- Skills to observe and identify changes in client behavior.
- Proficiency in managing conflict situations and employing non-violent crisis intervention strategies.
- Competence in working with diverse populations.
- A commitment to understanding and adhering to legislative obligations and provincial commitments regarding Indigenous rights and reconciliation.
