ROLE SUMMARY

As a Senior Information Specialist for the Cancer Information Helpline, you will address inquiries from Canadians affected by cancer, including patients, their families, and healthcare professionals, through various communication channels such as phone, Live Chat, and email. You will provide emotional support and empathetic understanding as needed, answer questions regarding cancer and its treatments, and connect clients with resources within CCS or other organizations to fulfill their informational and supportive care needs. Additionally, you may address inquiries from the general public concerning cancer prevention, screening, or cancer statistics published by CCS.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Respond to cancer-related inquiries from patients, their families, and healthcare professionals through multiple communication platforms.
  • Assess, research, and curate information tailored to each client's unique situation and needs, ensuring clear communication during interactions and following up with additional resources as necessary.
  • Utilize expert communication skills to help clients identify their psychosocial needs and provide appropriate resources and referrals.
  • Offer compassion and understanding, addressing emotional distress through active listening and supportive communication, thereby fostering a supportive environment.
  • Serve as the primary contact for CCS, addressing complex inquiries about cancer and articulating the organization's stance on key issues both verbally and in writing.
  • Maintain professionalism with sensitivity and clarity, free from personal bias.
  • Engage in self-directed learning to stay informed about the latest developments in oncology and related fields.
  • Navigate the CCS ecosystem to source information addressing client concerns and proactively raise issues and risks for the organization.

DATA MANAGEMENT AND STRATEGY:

  • Collect and enter client data into the helpline CRM using sensitive interview techniques.
  • Participate in quality assurance feedback processes to enhance data capture and recording techniques.

CONTRIBUTION TO CCS INITIATIVES:

  • Collaborate with the Cancer Information department to identify information gaps and share relevant external resources.
  • Engage in ongoing training and knowledge transfer activities to enhance core competencies.
  • Contact clients proactively when referred by CCS partners.
  • Contribute to special projects supporting CCS initiatives, including those related to COVID-19 and cancer system navigation.
  • Promote a culture of justice, belonging, equity, diversity, and inclusion within the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 1 to 3 years of relevant experience in a related field.
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing, social work, dietetics, or a related discipline.
  • Preferred registration in a Regulated Health Professional College.
  • Experience in a public-facing professional role.
  • Proficient in English, with bilingualism in French considered an asset.
  • Strong multitasking abilities.
  • Familiarity with common software applications.
  • Demonstrated client service and communication skills, contributing to a compassionate experience.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to collect sensitive client information accurately and maintain data integrity.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly.
  • Capacity to identify and escalate organizational risks.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team and adapt based on feedback.
