Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Culinary Kitchen Assistant to join our team at School District #63 (Saanich). As a key member of our culinary team, you will provide support to students in the Culinary Arts program, demonstrating and reinforcing food preparation techniques, and assisting with industry expectations of food preparation, presentation, service, and portion control.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct educational support to students in the Culinary Arts program by demonstrating and reinforcing food preparation techniques
  • Support students in the development of self-esteem, personal skills, hobbies, and interests that promote and build positive relationships and rapport
  • Monitor students and problem-solve with them in assisting with industry expectations of food preparation, presentation, service, and portion control
  • Assist all students with carrying out programs as recommended by professional staff by offering demonstrations to students in the preparation of foods, including salads, sandwiches, meats, vegetables, baked goods, and other items
  • Organize and prepare food items
  • Prepare and clean up for cooking classes
  • Laundry and maintain Chef jackets and aprons
  • Operate cash register and assist with cash handling procedures
  • Maintain and practice Food Safe standards, including dish washing, food storage, kitchen and equipment cleanliness, proper rotation and storage of food, laundry, etc.
  • Support the teacher
  • Train and orientate new staff, TTOC's on commercial kitchen best practices
  • Maintain economic use of food supplies
  • Shop, purchase, order, and receive supplies
  • Assist with the safe operation and routine maintenance of commercial kitchen equipment, including deep fryers and ovens
  • Respond to food service requests, including take-outs and coffee services
  • Assist with menu planning
Requirements
  • Minimum Level 1 Professional Cook Certificate or Hotel Restaurant Management Diploma
  • Two years of commercial kitchen experience with a minimum of one year working in an environment with children and youth
  • Advanced Specialized relevant skills in food preparation and marketing
  • Advanced knowledge of commercial kitchen food preparation, presentation, service, and portion control, cooking and baking techniques
  • Six months related cashiering experience
  • Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver's license
  • Food Safe Certificate Level 2
  • WHMIS certificate
  • Basic knowledge of WHMIS legislation
Desirable Skills
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and manage in a fast-paced high-stress environment with youth
