What Is the Opportunity?

This role, under close supervision, is tasked with the investigation and assessment of primarily low to moderate complexity claims to ascertain the coverage available to policyholders and claimants. The position involves managing third-party Personal Insurance and Business Insurance Auto Bodily Injury claims, which encompass a diverse range of loss causes. Additionally, the role requires the application of policy, legislation, and company protocols to all claims to effectively manage loss costs and customer relations. Occasionally, the position may involve claims with complexities related to unique coverage or damage issues. This role does not involve staff management.

What Will You Do?

  • Manage third-party Personal Injury and Bodily Injury claims of low to moderate severity and complexity as assigned.
  • Initiate contact with insured parties in accordance with Best Practice guidelines.
  • Respond to all phone calls and emails within established Best Practice timelines.
  • Provide clear explanations of the claims process and coverage to all clients.
  • Act as the primary liaison for customers, facilitating communication between them and other involved parties.
  • Participate in extended hours duties as necessary.
  • Inform underwriting of any information gathered that may influence risk assessment.
  • Conduct thorough investigations and evaluations of all pertinent facts to determine coverage, damages, and liability of Auto Bodily Injury claims across various policies.
  • Perform prompt investigations of coverage and liability.
  • Document claims files in accordance with Best Practices.
  • Manage pending and settled claims within company averages based on claim type, complexity, and geographical area.
  • Utilize a diary system to proactively manage files.
  • Review and analyze policy conditions, provisions, exclusions, and endorsements relevant to a variety of Auto Bodily Injury losses.
  • Examine amounts on all invoices and supporting documentation for payments.
  • Maintain diary follow-ups on all files to ensure timely resolution.
  • Ensure confidentiality of all claims files and company information.
  • Identify and promptly follow up on all salvage and subrogation opportunities.
  • Conduct investigations commensurate with the financial exposure of each loss handled.
  • Research company experience and available case law to substantiate quantum, coverage, and liability for casualty claims.
  • Manage files in accordance with established Best Practices.
  • Obtain and analyze leases, contracts, by-laws, and other relevant documents that may impact loss adjustments.
  • Establish timely and accurate claim and expense reserves, posting all reserves in the system within Best Practice guidelines and updating promptly as new information is received.
  • Determine appropriate settlement amounts based on independent judgment, computer-assisted estimates, actual cash value assessments, appraisals, and applicable limits and deductibles.
  • Communicate payment amounts to all customers through email or letter.
  • Refer all files exceeding settlement authority, with recommendations for resolution, to the Unit Manager and follow up until closure.
  • Negotiate and convey claim settlements within authority limits to insured parties.
  • Draft denial letters, Reservation of Rights, and other complex correspondence to insured parties.
  • Control damages through effective use of cost containment tools.
  • Meet all quality standards and expectations as per file standard guidelines.
  • Manage file inventory to ensure timely resolution of cases.
  • Handle files in compliance with applicable provincial regulations.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service to meet the needs of insured parties, brokers, and all other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify and refer claims with Major Case Unit exposure to the Unit Manager.
  • Recognize and refer claims that may benefit from an outside field inspection.
  • Identify and refer tasks to appropriate units for complex claims requiring special handling.
  • Determine cases with potential fraud and refer claims to investigative services.
  • Identify potential for subrogation and refer relevant claims to the Subrogation Unit.
  • Virtually manage inside claims from across the country, especially during periods of increased claim volume.
  • Occasional travel to other offices and provinces may be necessary.
  • Perform any other duties as required.
  • Ensure confidentiality of all claims files and company information.
  • Promptly identify and follow up on all salvage and subrogation opportunities.
  • Execute other assigned duties as necessary.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • University Degree/College Diploma or equivalent business experience preferred.
  • Enrollment in the CIP program is an asset.
  • High proficiency with Windows-based applications, including spreadsheet and word-processing software.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with individuals over the phone.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency in typing.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work independently.
  • Solid analytical and decision-making capabilities.
  • Adjusters license as required, based on business needs.
  • Customer service orientation and empathy.
  • Demonstrated ownership attitude and customer-centric approach to all assigned tasks.
  • Mathematical skills.
  • Exceptional negotiation skills.
  • Technical skills to utilize and leverage claims and estimating technology.
  • Acquisition and maintenance of Insurance License(s) may be required to comply with provincial and company requirements.

What is a Must Have?

  • A minimum of one year of relevant work experience.
  • Experience with computer technology, including Microsoft Office, email, web-enabled applications, and database software.
  • Ability to accurately perform a variety of numerical calculations.
  • Licensing Required: Acquisition and maintenance of Insurance License(s) may be necessary to comply with provincial and company requirements.
  • Must secure and maintain a company credit card if required.
