Job Overview:

Under the direction of the Clinical Manager, Support Teams and Operations, the After-Hours Manager plays a crucial role within the Baycrest Leadership Team. This position provides essential leadership and decision-making to ensure clinical and operational excellence, focusing on patient and family-centered care, transitions, and staffing during non-business hours. The After-Hours Manager is responsible for overseeing operations across the Baycrest Hospital and Apotex Long Term Care Home, ensuring that performance objectives are achieved while fostering an environment that embodies our core values of compassion, advocacy, respect, and empathy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the on-site Manager and primary escalation point for operational issues, providing support to staff during scheduled after-hours shifts.
  • Oversee hospital and Apotex Centre operations to guarantee timely patient transfers, high-quality care, and suitable staffing levels.
  • Conduct regular rounds in clinical areas to ensure compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Authorize and optimize staff resource utilization, including staff replacement and reassignment, to maintain appropriate staffing levels and skill mix.
  • Promote a patient and family-centered care philosophy, engaging interprofessional team members in addressing concerns raised by patients and families.
  • Encourage a positive work environment among staff, assisting in conflict resolution and problem-solving.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable resource during urgent and crisis situations, including Emergency Codes and Incident Management System (IMS) meetings.
  • Ensure compliance with legislative requirements for Acute Care and Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care, as well as professional and accreditation standards for care and safety.
  • Provide leadership for mandated reporting requirements as needed, collaborating with unit managers for follow-up.
  • Champion health and safety practices and infection prevention and control within the workplace.
  • Engage with external agencies, community partners, and the public as necessary.
  • Document shift activities to ensure continuity of care and effective transfer of accountability to subsequent after-hour managers or clinical managers.
  • Initiate discussions with staff regarding performance issues identified during shifts, documenting and communicating with relevant managers for follow-up.
  • Act as the primary contact after hours for the distribution of additional supplies as required.
  • Work hours include evenings, weekends, and holidays, along with occasional weekdays.

Qualifications:

  • Current membership in good standing with a Regulated Health Discipline Professional College in Ontario.
  • Baccalaureate Degree with a Master's Degree completed or in progress.
  • Current and valid Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
  • Extensive experience in the hospital and long-term care sector, with a minimum of 3 years in progressive leadership roles.
  • Ability to engage and support staff in fulfilling their responsibilities.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, interpersonal, conflict resolution, and negotiation skills.
  • Strong critical thinking abilities, capable of analyzing problems and making informed decisions swiftly.
  • Proven ability to work independently, exercising sound judgment and initiative.
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple activities while maintaining attention to detail and prioritization.
  • Proficient in computer applications and industry information systems (Meditech, Point Click Care).
  • Understanding of collective agreements and relevant legislation impacting the workplace (Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act).
  • Knowledge and experience in staff scheduling, labor relations, and hospital operations.
  • Consistent attendance record.
