About the Opportunity

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Utility Worker to join our team in the Nutrition and Food Services department at Nova Scotia Health and IWK Health. As a Utility Worker, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and ensuring the highest standards of food safety and sanitation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Meal Selections: Answer patient phone calls, enter meal selections on a computer, and visit patients in their rooms to enter meal selections on an electronic tablet.
  • Product/Food Preparation/Assembly and Service: Assemble, portion, and serve patient and visitor meals, prepare nourishments, special feedings, beverages, and menu items, and perform salad and sandwich preparation.
  • Delivery and Collection: Deliver and distribute selective menus and patient meals, deliver nourishments and supplies, and collect soiled patient trays.
  • Food Handling: Participate in receiving and storing supplies, receive and interpret patient diet/meal orders, confirm patient meal requirements, and manage inventory.
  • Menu Duties: Generate and print menus, reports, tallies, and labels, and print Meditech/STAR reports and compare to CBORD/Vision reports.
  • Food Safety and Sanitation: Clean and sanitize dishes, utensils, equipment, and work areas, maintain basic work area safety and sanitation, and ensure safe food handling and hygiene practices.

Requirements:

  • Education: Grade 12/GED or equivalent, or demonstrated skills and/or relevant work experience.
  • Skills: Restaurant experience, customer service skills, ability to work as part of a team, perform duties within expected timeframes and standards of accuracy, communicate effectively, and demonstrate civility and respect.
  • Language: Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred.
  • Physical Demands: Frequent physical demands include extensive standing and walking, bending, lifting (maximum of 35-40lbs), pulling and pushing, and transferring/transporting equipment.

Working Conditions:

  • Pot Room Requirements: Special footwear may be required for some food service areas, heavy lifting, physically demanding, repetitive tasks, and working independently.
