Unit Overview

Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) is a leading healthcare provider in Ontario, offering comprehensive specialty care across all stages of life. The McMaster Children's Hospital (MCH) is a prominent academic center dedicated to the care of critically ill neonates, treating around 1200 patients annually. HHS, with its extensive network of hospitals and specialized facilities, is committed to excellence in healthcare delivery, education, and research.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at MCH is a state-of-the-art facility with 70 beds, catering to the most vulnerable neonates in the region. The NICU team consists of over 350 dedicated professionals, including nurses, physicians, and allied health staff, all working collaboratively to provide the highest standard of care. The unit also operates a provincial Neonatal Transport Team, ensuring critical patients receive timely and effective care.

Position Overview

The Physician Assistant (PA) will function under the direct supervision of an available Attending Neonatal Intensive Care Physician within a multidisciplinary team in the NICU. The PA will be instrumental in ensuring adherence to clinical protocols and maintaining continuity of care. Responsibilities include:

  • Identifying and managing acute clinical issues prevalent in the NICU.
  • Providing a comprehensive range of physician assistant services as per granted privileges.
  • Coordinating consultations and referrals to appropriate healthcare professionals.
  • Ordering diagnostic tests and prescribing medications in accordance with established guidelines.

Reporting Structure

The PA will report directly to the NICU Clinical Director and will also have dual accountability to the Medical Director of the NICU.

Work Schedule

Variable hours, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
  • Experience in a Critical Care environment is preferred.
  • Ability to make informed decisions in emergency situations.
  • Proven collaboration skills with healthcare professionals across disciplines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Commitment to patient and family-centered care.
  • Strong leadership, critical thinking, and organizational skills.

As a condition of employment, proof of full COVID-19 vaccination is required.
