Unit Overview

Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) is a leading healthcare provider in Ontario, delivering specialized medical services throughout the life span. The McMaster Children's Hospital (MCH) serves as a premier academic center, providing care to a significant number of critically ill neonates each year. With a commitment to health research and education, MCH is fully affiliated with McMaster University, ensuring a high standard of care.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at MCH is a state-of-the-art facility with a capacity of 70 beds, dedicated to the most vulnerable patients in the region. The NICU team consists of over 350 professionals, including nurses, physicians, and allied health staff, working collaboratively to provide comprehensive care. The unit also features a provincial Neonatal Transport Team, available around the clock to assist in the transfer of critically ill neonates.

Position Overview

The Physician Assistant (PA) will operate under the direct supervision of an Attending Neonatal Intensive Care Physician within a multidisciplinary team environment. The PA will be instrumental in ensuring the consistent application of clinical protocols and continuity of patient care. Responsibilities include:

  • Identifying and managing acute clinical issues in neonates.
  • Providing a full spectrum of physician assistant services as per granted privileges.
  • Ordering diagnostic tests and prescribing medications as per established guidelines.
  • Collaborating with other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes.

Reporting Structure

The PA will report directly to the NICU Clinical Director and will also have accountability to the Medical Director of the NICU.

Work Schedule

Variable hours including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
  • Experience in a Critical Care setting is preferred.
  • Strong decision-making skills in emergency situations.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse healthcare team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to patient and family-centered care.
  • Demonstrated leadership and critical thinking abilities.
  • Capacity for independent action and problem-solving.
