McMaster Children's Hospital, situated in Hamilton's west-end, ranks as the second largest children's hospital in Canada. We proudly host the fastest-growing pediatric emergency department in Ontario, along with one of the country's most sophisticated neonatal intensive care units, and a variety of specialized programs and clinics.

The Pediatric Otolaryngology department at McMaster Children's Hospital provides comprehensive consultative, surgical, and follow-up services for infants, children, and adolescents. Our patient demographic includes a high volume of outpatient and inpatient care for those experiencing congenital and acquired disorders related to the Ear, Nose, and Throat. Our team adopts a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to patient care.

Position Overview

The Physician Assistant will operate under the direct supervision of Pediatric Otolaryngologists, playing a pivotal role in ensuring the consistent application of clinical protocols and continuity of care, while utilizing evidence-based practices. This position involves collaboration with Pediatric Otolaryngologists, consultants, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive medical assessments, management, and education.

The Physician Assistant will support the clinical activities of Pediatric Otolaryngologists, including patient care and interventions across various settings such as the Pediatric ENT Clinic, Pediatric Emergency Department, Pediatric Inpatient Units, and Operating Rooms. Responsibilities include providing a full spectrum of physician assistant services, consulting with relevant physicians and clinicians, ordering diagnostic tests, and prescribing medications as permitted by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.

Additionally, the Physician Assistant will contribute to the education of other healthcare trainees and engage in research and academic initiatives as directed by the supervising physician.

Work Schedule

Monday to Friday, during daytime hours, with occasional evenings and weekends as required.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program
  • Previous experience in Pediatric Otolaryngology and/or Pediatric Acute Care settings is advantageous
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of experience applying advanced Otolaryngology knowledge and physical assessment skills in an ambulatory care environment
  • Proficiency in conducting comprehensive histories and examinations for infants, toddlers, children, and adolescents
  • Knowledge of developmental milestones across all pediatric stages, including unique adolescent development aspects
  • Experience in leading and facilitating educational programs for patients, families, and healthcare staff
  • Demonstrated ability to make informed decisions and perform effectively in high-pressure situations
  • Strong collaboration skills with multidisciplinary healthcare teams
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities
  • Commitment to professional development and patient-centered care
  • Proven leadership and critical thinking capabilities
  • Ability to manage significant emotional stress when interacting with families of critically or chronically ill children
