Unit Overview
Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) is a prominent healthcare provider in Ontario, dedicated to delivering specialized medical services across all stages of life. The McMaster Children's Hospital (MCH) stands as a leading academic center, renowned for its commitment to exceptional healthcare, education, and research. MCH caters to approximately 1200 critically ill neonates each year, supported by a robust multidisciplinary team.
Position Overview
The Physician Assistant (PA) will operate under the direct oversight of an Attending Neonatal Intensive Care Physician within a collaborative team environment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This role is pivotal in ensuring the consistent application of clinical protocols and continuity of patient care. The PA will be responsible for identifying patients facing acute clinical challenges typical in the NICU and will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to manage patient care effectively.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive physician assistant services as per granted privileges.
- Facilitate consultations or referrals to appropriate medical professionals and resources as necessary.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests as required.
- Prescribe and dispense medications in accordance with established guidelines.
Reporting Structure
The PA will report directly to the NICU Clinical Director and will also have dual accountability to the Medical Director of the NICU.
Work Schedule
Variable hours, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
- Experience in a Critical Care environment is preferred.
- Ability to make informed decisions in emergency situations.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with Intensivists, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Commitment to professional development and patient-centered care.
- Demonstrated leadership and critical thinking abilities.
- Capacity for independent action, initiative, and effective problem-solving.
As a condition of employment, proof of full COVID-19 vaccination is required.
