McMaster Children's Hospital (MCH), situated on the McMaster University campus, has been dedicated to the care of children since 1988. Our family-centered approach ensures that patients, from infancy to 17 years old, receive comprehensive support for their emotional, mental, and physical health. The hospital features Ontario's fastest-growing pediatric emergency department and one of Canada's most sophisticated neonatal intensive care units, alongside various specialized programs.

Position Overview

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at McMaster Children's Hospital encompasses a Level III NICU, a Level IIc nursery, and a neonatal transport team, delivering both medical and surgical care to newborns and their families. Our NICU serves a wide geographic area in southern Ontario, and our interdisciplinary team emphasizes family-centered care, grounded in evidence-based practices and ongoing quality enhancement.

The NICU environment is dynamic, complex, and highly acute. As a Registered Nurse, you will play a crucial role within the interdisciplinary team, collaborating in both the Level III NICU and Level IIc nursery. Your responsibilities will include providing exceptional neonatal nursing care to patients and their families while demonstrating a commitment to enhancing the patient and family experience.

Work Schedule

Rotating shifts including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
  • Certification in Neonatal/Perinatal nursing or equivalent
  • Current Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) and Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience in a Level II Nursery within the last three (3) years
  • Understanding of pre-term and full-term infant pathophysiology and management of infants requiring acute care
  • Awareness of family dynamics related to birth, critical illness, and end-of-life issues
  • Proven ability to deliver comprehensive nursing care to critically ill newborns and their families
  • Demonstrated teaching capabilities and knowledge of adult learning principles
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, particularly in high-pressure situations
  • Strong teamwork, organizational, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to perform effectively in critical, high-stress scenarios
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and responsive to changing environments and patient needs

As a condition of employment, proof of full COVID-19 vaccination is required.
