Role Overview

On-site | Full-time

As a key member of the Winnipeg management team, the Inorganic Laboratory Operations Supervisor will oversee all facets of inorganic laboratory analysis, including production management, staff oversight, financial accountability, quality assurance, and efficiency of turnaround times.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage staff schedules to ensure optimal coverage while maintaining fiscal responsibility, including handling absenteeism and vacation requests.
  • Collaborate with the Manager to conduct interviews, onboard new personnel, and recommend or implement disciplinary actions and performance improvement plans as necessary;
  • Effectively manage human resources within the department, including recruitment, performance evaluations, employee relations, attendance, and promotions with the support of the Department Manager;
  • Organize and deliver training for team members as required;
  • Work with the Manager to complete annual performance assessments for employees;
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of supplies and consumables to support laboratory operations while ensuring efficiency;
  • Ensure adherence to maintenance and preventative maintenance schedules;
  • Prepare and maintain production reports and statistics for the Laboratory Manager;
  • Uphold ALS quality management system standards (QMS) for the department;
  • Conduct thorough data reviews, interpretations, and processing;
  • Ensure compliance with methodologies and accreditation requirements;
  • Participate in internal and external audits for the department, ensuring timely resolution of any findings;
  • Facilitate regular team discussions to address safety, quality, process modifications, management topics, and corporate communications;
  • Proactively assess procedures and processes, providing insights on their quality and reliability to the laboratory;
  • Collaborate with other departments to address client inquiries, production challenges, and service concerns;
  • Utilize appropriate methods in accordance with established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
  • Adhere to established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Candidate Profile:

  • Exceptional English communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • Capable of effectively managing escalations and time-sensitive issues;
  • Demonstrated judgment, creativity, integrity, and problem-solving abilities;
  • Commitment to continuous improvement in developing new processes or enhancing existing ones;
  • Proven ability to communicate clearly and effectively with both internal and external stakeholders;
  • Proficient in preparing and presenting information in an engaging and informative manner;
  • Strong focus on safety;
  • Highly motivated, with the ability to take initiative and work collaboratively within a team;
  • Excellent customer service orientation, interpersonal skills, and organizational abilities;

Required Qualifications:

  • Degree in Chemistry or a related discipline;
  • At least 6 years of experience in operating and maintaining analytical chemistry instrumentation across various methods;
  • Familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025 or similar international standards for laboratory operations;
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience leading a team in a laboratory environment;
  • Strong computer proficiency, including MS Excel and MS Word;

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs;
  • Capability to stand for extended periods;
  • Ability to perform general office work, including periodic sedentary tasks;
  • Manual dexterity to perform repetitive tasks;
