Position Overview: Chief Laboratory Operations Officer

Role Summary: The Chief Laboratory Operations Officer serves as the primary executive responsible for the formulation and execution of the clinical laboratory strategy within the healthcare system, ensuring alignment with the overall vision for laboratory services.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee the quality assurance of clinical laboratory services, including the standardization of reference ranges and critical values to enhance patient safety.
  2. Integrate advanced information technology to ensure uniformity and standardize instrument platforms, optimizing operational efficiency across quality, contracting, finance, reimbursement, and human resources.
  3. Provide strategic leadership in the development and execution of visionary plans aimed at the continuous enhancement of laboratory services and the expansion of laboratory practices, in alignment with the broader organizational mission.
  4. Collaborate with senior leadership to formulate operational plans, quality improvement initiatives, processes, and tools to ensure effective laboratory utilization.
  5. Establish, endorse, and interpret laboratory organizational policies, procedures, and related protocols in compliance with organizational, state, federal, licensing, and accreditation standards.
  6. Monitor safety and performance benchmarks in accordance with organizational and regulatory standards to maintain a secure work environment.
  7. Lead the preparation and forecasting of annual budgets, ensuring the fiscal integrity of laboratory operations, evaluating cost-effectiveness of service delivery, overseeing technical and professional fee structures, and monitoring third-party reimbursements.
  8. Conduct comprehensive cost-benefit analyses for new programs and services.
  9. Provide executive leadership for the advancement of Digital Pathology and the consolidation of histology operations to meet both internal and external clinical business requirements.
  10. Assess the achievement of laboratory budget goals, productivity benchmarks, and performance metrics across each laboratory cost center.
  11. Promote workforce planning and leadership development initiatives to ensure a competent team for the sustained success of laboratory services.
  12. Act as a liaison among laboratory directors, physician leaders, nursing leaders, and administrative personnel to address and resolve issues requiring system-level administrative intervention.

Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in Business Administration, Health Services, Science, Healthcare Administration, or a related field is required.
  • A minimum of ten years of leadership experience in a progressive academic medical center or similarly complex healthcare system, with a proven track record in managing multidisciplinary and multi-site laboratory operations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in understanding and adhering to state, federal, licensing, and accreditation regulatory guidelines and compliance.
