Position Overview

Join Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) as an Indigenous Health Navigator

Vancouver Coastal Health is seeking an Indigenous Health Navigator to become part of the Indigenous Health Patient Experience team. This role is essential in fostering a supportive environment for First Nations, Metis, and Inuit clients and their families.

Responsibilities of the Indigenous Health Navigator include:

  • Reporting to the Director of Indigenous Patient Experience, the Indigenous Health Navigator (IHN) is responsible for delivering daily health system navigation assistance to ensure safe and welcoming environments for Indigenous clients.
  • Collaborate with clients and primary care teams to facilitate effective access to primary and community-based health services.
  • Ensure patient care is delivered in a culturally sensitive and respectful manner by connecting with clients and families, addressing their inquiries or concerns, and providing traditional resources that complement existing healthcare practices.
  • Engage with various Indigenous community organizations to enhance service delivery.
  • Contribute to the development and evaluation of programs aimed at improving services for Indigenous clients through effective navigation of the healthcare system.
  • Approach responsibilities with a commitment to VCH's values, emphasizing Indigenous Cultural Safety, anti-racism, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • A minimum of two to three years of relevant experience working with Indigenous communities in British Columbia, complemented by training or education in a related field.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in healthcare, Social Work, Nursing, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Preference will be given to Indigenous candidates, including First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Peoples.
  • Candidates are encouraged to self-identify as Indigenous in their application materials.
  • Willingness to travel within the health authority's jurisdiction is necessary, with access to reliable transportation.

Knowledge & Skills

  • In-depth understanding of community-based First Nations, Metis, and Inuit organizations in British Columbia.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of health challenges affecting Indigenous communities.
  • Familiarity with Indigenous and non-Indigenous services and resources available within VCH's communities of care for Indigenous clients seeking health and social support.
  • Proven ability to address cultural matters with sensitivity.
  • General knowledge of Trauma-Informed Practices and Harm Reduction approaches.
  • Demonstrated capability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety.
  • Proven ability to provide competent and culturally safe care across diverse settings.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues, partners, and clients.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficient in using word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.

Additional Information
